pikes peak

pikes peak was really fun.
when you get there, they tell you that it's like no other event you've ever done.
they are definitely right.
my personal results were mixed. i qualified 11th out of 22 but crashed out in the initial paved section in a turn called Engineer's Corner. Lots of rookies eat it there.
but it was a freakin' blast anyways.
Joe Prussiano won my class(450) and set a new class record so a big congrats to him. Joe is a fantastic rider and it's no coincidence he has won three times. If you're planning on winning, you're gonna have to go thru him.
Also, throughout the whole week, he made time to mentor the rest of us Texans that made the trip up. He helped me with sign-up, jetting, finding a place to stay, course knowledge, and anything else that we needed...all the while preparing for his own race. I can't thank him enough for making things easy for us.
And also, congratulations to Chris Thomas, Craig Gleason, and Rusty Wilson for their results. All of the Texans rode really well.
There is no way I will miss this event in 2011. It's just too much excitement and fun!

First, congratulations!!! That's one race I would be proud to run, regardless of my finish position. Maybe i missed it in your old posts, but what were you riding? Any special preparations just for the peak? Got pictures you can share?

special prep?

unfortunately, i just got my bike two days before the race so i didnt have time to do much prep work.
it was a stock HondaCR450F. And actually, I had never ridden a 4-stroke dirt bike until this event. I put about 20 minutes around my yard and that was all the time I had to ride one.
So it was all stock except for the jetting which we had to change, of course. Joe got me 90% there before i left home. The rest we figured out when I got to practice.
Oh yea, I also put on a giant flywheel weight...I think it was a 17oz.
I had a DT tire on the rear and another dual-sport tire on the front.
I definitely would do things differently there.
Next year, I will go the SM route. There's no way i would ride MX suspension...it's too hard to ride on the paved sections.
But even with my stock bike...it was fun. And if you dont get greedy like i did, you can have a great run up the hill.

Could you share some contact info? A run up Pikes Peak is something I'd def like to do if I can get my hands on a DRZ400 before next year's run.

No dirt sections next year from what I understand-just got back and they were already in the middle of surveying and prep work before paving. I was up there last Thursday to drive my wife up-she had never been-said the people where nuts!!!

Pikes Peak has been on my radar for a while. I have an old Jaguar that I had planned to prep for it, but I threw a rod at the Big Bend Open Road Race and I'm sure I won't have it fixed for next year. But, I have a Husky SM450 that I'd like to try it on. Keep us posted.
