Problem with shifting into third

Need some advice before my buddy takes his bike to a shop. Buddy dropped his zx10r in Galveston on seawall after running over a skateboard that popped out in front of him. Layed the bike down at about 35 mph on the left side. Most of the damage was just cosmetic but the left rearset and shift linkage was broken off during crash. Bike has new rearset with linkage but now will not shift any higher than 2nd gear. Went over to his house and played with clutch and shifter linkage and still will not shift into 3rd. Buddy recalls being in 3rd at time of accident. Anyone have a clue what might be going on? If nothing else I will probably seek the wisdom of Patrick at Motorcycles Unlimited. Any advice?

doesnt sound like something a typical garage mechanic could handle. hopefully it will be something a little more simple.

I had a prob like that with the 500...it was a broken clutch plate in my case. Probably not a do-it-yourself kinda deal. GL getting it fixed!

Thanks for the input. I guess we'll leave it to the experts at Motorcycles Unlimited.
