Naw, that's aluminum welding, but it seems the head's surface wasn't clean enough and gave out.

And if you look the underside of the piston, it looks like it got severely hot, looks like detonation...maybe lean mixture?

The aluminum welding was from when I threw a cam chain due to a bolt being left loose on a bad valve adjustment (from before I bought it) as collateral damage. I do not think it contributed to the failure

I have no idea what caused the piston to do that, although I sent the pics to someone I trust and they mentioned pre-ignition. I don't think it was too lean. There is the possibility the motor may have had a hot spot from the prior water pump issues (not being burped properly after water pump seal instal), but wouldn't the piston show heat damage? Or is that what it would look like?

Anyone else have any suggestions?

The magnetic plug does look like that at most oil changes (a little more than usual this go around), as most others with KTM's can probably attest to.

Katoom.

Thanks Chad, looking forward to getting it back together.

Good point.

Yep, it lost power all right...

To be honest, I had ridden the YZ450 at an earlier track day with slicks, and just thought I was out of calibration on the KTM. Now I know why it seemed so much slower. Course, I don't pick up on stuff real well

Cool I'll give them a call and compare prices. I've got an account with a local KTM dealer. Btw you still owe me $20 for the tire change lol.

I took the bike to Barber and the think went BOOM again

Not really. It ran perfectly. Thanks for fixing it up for me. I am VERY happy with the end result. If anyone has a 450 Katoom that went Boom, I'd say give Chad a call.

I am happy with the price, the work, the whole thing.
