solved. did MORE research, common problem. didnt wanna take the gauge apart yet so i used chopsticks to do it.

Hold both buttons down for about 5 seconds and the clock will start to flash. You can toggle b/w the hour and min and set them each individually. You don't need to take apart the buttons.
