Cops ID man killed in motorcycle wreck

GALVESTON — Authorities on Tuesday identified a Houston motorcyclist who died in a fiery, head-on collision with a furniture truck.

Samuel Edwardo Rios, 29, died of multiple, blunt-force trauma stemming from the wreck about 10 p.m. Monday just west of 37th Street on Harborside Drive, according to reports from police and the medical examiner.

Galveston police received a call of a reckless driver traveling south on Interstate 45 over the causeway at speeds of more than 100 mph, Capt. Jeff Heyse, a police spokesman, said.

An officer spotted the 2006 Kawasaki Ninja at 51st Street and Harborside Drive, Heyse said.

“The officer got behind him, lit him up, and he fled south on 51st Street,” Heyse said.

After reaching the bottom of the bridge, the motorcyclist made a U-turn, Heyse said.

“There was no way to catch him,” Heyse said. “The pursuit was called off, but the officer continued down Harborside, at which time he saw from the top of the viaduct the bike crash and catch on fire.”

Because the crash involved a fatality after a police pursuit, Galveston police relinquished its investigation to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Heyse said.

Troopers working the crash reported Rios was traveling east on Harborside Drive at high speed when he hit the second vehicle, which was traveling west.

Both vehicles caught fire and were consumed in the blaze. Troopers had no immediate information on what the second vehicle was.

According to reports from the crash scene, the westbound vehicle was a loaded furniture truck.

The truck driver, a man, 61, from Hudson, N.C., suffered minor injuries and was taken to the University of Texas Medical Branch.

A hospital spokeswoman didn’t list him as a patient Tuesday.

Rios was wearing a helmet, a trooper reported.

About 30 minutes before the crash, authorities in Harris County received a report of a motorcyclist passing NASA Road 1 and heading into Galveston County at more than 100 mph.

A message left with the Department of Public Safety seeking comment on whether the report was related to Rios’ crash wasn’t immediately returned.

What I dont get is the CR has a name on his profile "Arron Smith" then there are some of his post that say sam, which is correct. Just kind of weird after going through some of the old posts. Just a very sad situation, and I just really wonder if he was not actually suicidal.

Just thought that was very odd to say the least. Kind of threw me off, I wonder when they do a autopsy if they will check for BAC level, considering the post about him being "a little drunk" at 6pm and this accident happened at 10pm. Then everyone saying he was late to work. After seeing what has been reported and stuff, I really see no way he didnt know he was being chased by the police. Just tragic for everyone involved and thank he didnt take anyone else out with him. I know I have made some bone head moves in my time, but I would never run from the police for anything.

If he was just haulin azz along and didnt look back he may not have known. It happens a lot. Its worse if they never get close enough to see or if you dont have mirrors.
