It can get worse, the chain can break, seize up between the front sprocket and the casing, cause the rear tire to lock up for a short bit and even crack the engine case.

You'd be amazed how many show up for an ERC with rusted chains, low tires, etc.

My favorite is when they show up with cords showing on the rear tire.

Lucky for him it just "fell" off. I've seen some nasty chains out there. To me it's just pure laziness not to maintain your bikes chain. And going at those speeds? It could have been a lot lot worse for both riders. Hopefully lessons were learned that day.

Well, i just got my Ninja 500 last month, and it's only got 1000 miles. It didn't come with an owners manual, i ordered one should get it in a few days and will read it throughly.

But how often should a chain be oiled?

Everytime you ride in the rain or it needs oiling.

Speaking of rain... I've been caught a few times in the last two weeks.
