What I did this weekend

Well, here it is, another Sunday another Story. Whats different about this one though, is it actually happened. For those who don't know me, I moonlight as a used car salesman when I'm not working as an Air Conditioning Tech. This basically means, I have the two scummiest jobs in the world, no one likes to see me because I'm only around when theres a problem.

Anyone who's self employed knows what I mean by those "once in a lifetime deals" well, I had one this weekend that really did make an imression on me. It started out like this.

I was at home throwing up some iron on my porch when I got the call, it was the owner of the car lot, "Hey man, I need you to pick up a car off of University Blvd for me, you got time?" When your working out, there isn't a lot of blood to spare for your brain, this is why people who do are referred to as meatheads, they seem dumb dimbwitted and only know one thing, lift eat lift eat. Thats not true, however, it's just when your getting a good pump.. all that extra blood that you use for being smart is utilized elsewhere.. so that blank stare you might see if you ask someone in the gym a question is not a show of unintelligence.. it's just a show of effort that they are really involved in their routine, all the upper functions of the brain have shut down and the only thing left are the basic lifting insticts.. lift lift lift, rest rest drink, lift lift lift, rest rest drink.. "Hey are you there? cellphones... " "No no man I'm here" I suddenly blurted, during the pause I was trying to think where in the world University blvd was... I didn't know so it had to be far off "Wheres that at man?" He began blurting out a string of directions which I was halfway listening to trying to picture, while still looking at the bench thinking "Only two more sets, ..." "Anyways I need you to pick this thing up quick, i dont' want it to stay out, can you do that?" He finished.

I really wasnt enthusiastic about this.. I mean, that was a long ways off "I guess" I replied... "What is it?" "You'll never believe it! I just picked up a 500 SL mercedes fromt this old lawyer from Arizona.. only 48k miles it looks showroom!" At this point he had my full attention "Let me get my hat" "He has the master key on him still, he'll let you have it when you get there, I'll pick it up Sunday I'm gonna be busy" quickly in my head I counted the days.... 3. I double checked, thursday.. friday.. saturday.. 3 days with a 500 series Mercedes, I pinched myself, 'Ow!' "You stubb your toe again, I hate that anyways be carefull with that thing.. oh and one other thing.. I know how you are.. and if you do get in a wreck.. just make sure they hit you.. and make sure whoever hits you has insurance. I'll see you later"

And just like that I had been given full reign of this car. I packed up the woman into the family wagon and made record time to the neighborhood where the vehicle was at. The person that sold it was a lawyer from AZ who bought the car new, paid cash all $106,517.54 worth. He moved to Houston in 03 with it and was moving to California next month.. but just didn't want to 'deal with the hassle of dragging it around the country again'. So he sold it to my car lot for a reasonable price. He began talking to me like I had just crawled out of the womb stood up, blinked twice and was about to experience a new thing called "driving" for the first time ever. "This is how you start it, this button does this, that button does that, the blinkers are here" I understand the sentimental attachment people have to their vehicles, and even though I feigned interest all I was thinking was "Get out of the car old man, she's callin my name!"

So now I'm driving on the highway, with the hard top on (wasn't enough room in the truck I drove to put it in there) and I actually felt I had never really "driven" a car before this one truth be told. I've driven cars that were fast... I've driven cars that were smooth in corners and I've driven cars that felt like you were floating down the road on an air pocket.. but I've never driven one that was able to do all three at the same time. When you floor this thing and release the 315 hp (according to the owner) motor your first impression is "wow thats pretty quick" but after the briefest pause you realise you did not in fact, put it all the way down, it can go just a little further, and if you dare to push that envelope, well, the only way I know how to describe it is "Ludicrous speed" I did, in fact, see plaid. It was that fast.

After making the trip back home.. I popped off the hard top, and went into the town 'topless' I was amazed at how much attention this thing got, both good and bad. I also began to realize that unlike the countless trans ams, camaro's, even corvettes that I've had the opportunity to hot rod on the town, I wasn't in a big hurry to drive fast, just knowing that I could was fine. I had more fun cruising down the road and knowing what was beneath my foot.. without constantly burning out at every opportunity.

I've gone my whole life thinking people who drove cars like these were stupid that just liked to show off money, but now having had the opportunity to experience the 'other' side, I understand the want to be in a vehicle like this. It made driving a pleasure instead of a task, how it would roll through a curve, the quiet humm of the motor and even the shape of the car, How you can be riding down the road with the top off, windows down, and still not mess your hair up.

The first night I actually had dreams about it when I went to sleep. This truly is a first for someone who see's any vehicle on the road as "a paycheck" instead of a car. This one really impressed me.

When I woke up the next day I went out to get the paper and I saw a couple of my neighbors standing around it.. I started to get the broom to shoo them off but I figured they were just bored. I walked out to say hi and they asked if I had won the lotto or something "nah, just another lot car" is all I replied. Thats the type of attention this car gets though.

When I gave it back sunday it was very surreal, I had the feeling like I won the lottery, then blew everything in one vegas vacation. It was almost like a dream. The funny thing is though, now that it's gone and all I have is the memory of it, I don't really miss it. I got caught up in the moment for sure, but then I realized that I was ashamed of myself for liking it as much as I did. I was thinking in my head about buying that car with money that I shouldn't be spending and felt guilty for not trying to send that money to the church instead where it really needed to be, and I felt guilty for not pursuing the Bible with the same enthusiasm that I pursued this car.

As much fun as it was, it was only a thing, an object. I'm glad I had the opportunity to experience it, but I'm even more thankfull for the lesson it taught me. I haven't been involved in the church lately like I should have been, and it took something like this to really open my eyes. I'm not saying the car is bad, in fact, the deal is the car lot owner isn't selling it, he's gonna drive it for a year, then I'm gonna buy it from him. The whole thing comes down to not forgetting where the nice things in your life come from, and remembering to pursue the Bible with the same passion that you pursue your 'things'. That way when you do have them, the victory will be that much sweeter.

BTW heres a couple quick pics of the car, with my crew posing =)

did you put the roll bar up on the car? if it is down and you begin to crash it will instantly pop to the up position, nice but sux if you are really tall.

Yeah I had It up while the top was down, made the car look pretty cool =)

Someone told me it'll start coming up if you go in very excessive speeds, but I honestly didn't get a chance to test it out (took it to 120 once)

That was my only complaint about the whole thing though, your even taller than me if I remember right, but the seats just didn't quite go back far enough for me.

I'm hooked, seriously, I have already justified buying it in my mind. I've been leaning on the guy I work for to start buying higher end cars to sell like this
