the more vacuum you create the fast the freon and oil get sucked in.. and the more moisture gets boiled out...

remmeber the a/c system is a sealed system so if it is low there's a reason. put the dye stuff in so you can find the leak easier. and make sure you put the synthetic compressor oil in.

Alright, freon WILL NOT last forever, as a matter of fact, the chemical composition of freon makes it "degenerate' or break down, so to speak, at a a rate of about half a pound a year, depending of use, simply because of the heat cycles it's subjected, when you turn the AC on, low pressure side will get cold, only to get super hot when it reaches the compressor again.
And no, Autozone will not fix your car, like Ricky said, you absolutely need a vacuum pump that at least pulls a 1 cfm .

if there's plain air in the system when pumping the freo in, it will create excessive pressure in the system, simply because air carries a lot of moisture, not to mention the oil the systems uses is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs water. and water will expand when subjected to pressure, thus producing heat, and when it expands, it will rise the pressure.

in other words, you'r ac system would be bueno for caca.

call me Los, you got my numba.

Well, not to step on your toes, but R-22 (house freon) and R-134 (modern car freon) and R-12 ((OOlder caars) have different compositions, not too mention they are subjeccted to different pressures and temperatures.

22. Does freon have an odor?

No! "Freon" or refrigerant is odorless and colorless.

Mobile freon is colorless, but not odorless.

I still stand by what I wrote.

Freon also gets contaminated over time. It should last forever just as long as the system never has a problem. Like a filter coming apart, or in the case of a house A/C the compressor going out. The windings on the compressor motor sit in a bath of oil and at coated with a epoxy resin. When it burns out, the chemicals from the resin enter the freon stream.

As everyone that knows says, you have to pull a vaccum on the system for quite a while (up to an hour for most cars) to boil out the moisture. The vaccum lowers the boiling point of water and evaporates it.

You should also replace the drier in the system and the strainer if your car has one. Most cars also have an expansion valve on them. They will get messed up if the drier came apart and got into the lines. I would suggest replacing it as well if the system isn't cooling well after replacing the compressor. It is the number 1 failure point that causes compressors to go out.

How do I know some of these things you ask? I have an education in A/C and a license. I fixed big units (chillers on sky scrapers) all the way down to water fountains. And now I am an engineer that designs controls for chemical plants. I have done a lot of work in plants that make freon. I work at Honeywell and we have some plants in LA that I did some extensive work in. They make 134a, 125, 245 and some others there. What ever you do, don't catch freon on fire. It creates mustard gas (phosgene gas).
