shift fork and gears are most probably toast, bring it to motorcycles unlimited and they will check it out and let u know what your gonna look at to fix it.

yep second gear and likely shift fork are bad. Only way to fix it is to open up the transmission.
It aint cheap but it costs less then a new bike. (especially when you consider you will be selling/trading in a bike with a bad second gear).

Ouch! If in fact it is the trans...it could be a combination of wear and tear on the gears, drum, and forks.
Transmission work isn't gonna be cheap. The labor is gonna eat a lot of money, some bikes need the cases split to remove the gears and that means dropping the motor and all kinds of fun stuff! GOOD LUCK, even though your probably gonna need more money than luck!

You say you have a '97 kawi ZX6.
For what it is gonna cost you, you might want to start shopping for another bike.
Sorry but that's the truth.

look at a manual, I replaced the shift forks (05 ZX6-R) by just removing the pan and side cover

When my tranny bit the dust it was going to cost me around $2,000-$2,500 without looking at it to fix it I got on craig's list and found a trannt for $100 bucks and the guy I bought it from put it in and got the bike back to me in 3 days. He only charged me $750. if you are interested I still have the guys number his shop is over off of I-10.
