i ran my 06 r6 without the muffler. i cut where the servo met the muffler. and kept the servo on. but i could definitely tell that i lost some power. i think it was due to the lack of back pressure. but it didn't seem like it did much other than that.

You can run without a muffler and not suffer any damage, just the lose of low end torque power. I really wouldn't run just header, just for the sake of it. The amount you would spend on plugs/valves/repairs far exceeds a mid pipe and muffler. Correct me if im wrong.

If you have no head pipe the valves are less than an inch from the outside air.
We forget the conditions inside a motor but those valves are almost hot enough to glow. When that relatively cold air hits those red hot valves they can warp.
Warped valves=bad

Well, that and it's a Bandit.

What about if you have an open header then to combat the cooler air?

Open header will prevent the cold air from getting to the valves but the entire intake/exhaust system is designed to work together to maximize airflow. Motors are just air pumps that we sneal a little fuel into.
When you mess with the system you make more noise but less power. Unless you have hundreds of hours of design and dyno testing to perfect the flow characteristics. That's what the aftermarket pipe mfrs do.
Notice that even racebikes have some sort of muffler. Mufflers don't increase performance but they make it possible to live with the noise and not hurt performance.

So, please do the right thing and keep some kinda muffler on your bike. It will keep everybody happier and save you from wasting money on loud pipe tickets.
