so how did you slow down and come to a stop? maybe the clutch release rod at the end of the cable is damaged so it's not grabbing the clutch rod on the end of the basket. Also, could be the cable came out of the clutch cable bracket, or the locking nut came loose on the cable?? I'm assuming it's not a burnt clutch because you were still able to ride.

i came to a stop by stalling out! the we started it just fine but we have trouble puttin into gear. we also had a runnin start on 2nd gear and it rode thru all the gears but when it came to a stop it stalled out again. we too the cover off n it looks like the release shaft look kinda worn. by any chance you know where i can get one of them shaft??

i am guessing your clutch plates are due for replacement! The previous owner must have used the bike for drag racing so that causes a lot of wear and tear on clutch components (clutch basket, plates, etc)

What color are the fiber plates and the friction plates? Does the engine rev fast but not seem to go at the same rate? A telltale way to spot a burnt clutch is to put it in third gear and slowly apply throttle and front brakes, if it dies the the clutch is not the problem, although this won't work in your case.

I actually might have a spare part for you. I have that year motor laying around my shop somewhere. PM me tomorrow and I'll let you know if I found it.

how hard is it to replace the clutch cable on it? i have a 00 zx9 also, and i just busted the clutch cable on it 4 blocks from my house about 30 min. ago. i downshifted w/o the clutch on the way home and killed it in the driveway luckily.
