opinions of 01 yami yzf-r6

Been looking at an 01 yzf-r6 but got some troubling info from a very reputable source about that year. Before I make any hasty decisions I want to hear from people who have had experiences with this bike. Help me make an informed decision.

I got one of the early 99s to hit Atlanta. (Same bike basically from its launch in '99 through 2002) I put a lot of street miles on it, then turned it into a track day bike. It went down more than a couple times, got repeatedly banged off the rev limiter and was generally pummelled mercilously for 25,000 street and track miles before being sold to a jackass who has probably totalled it since. Only problem with the bike (that wasn't self-induced) was a fuel pump at about 5000 miles.

I very sincerely miss that bike. I have nothing but love for the first gen R6s - Plus I've still got some parts that fit a 99-02 if anyone needs them. I've got two black wheels w/rotors and cush. Pirelli Dragon Corsa slicks on them, but they're probably beyond their useful life for the most part. Got a complete transmission in near perfect shape. Also got a 520 ft sproket, probably a few 520 rears of various teeth and other assorted pieces. I somewhat regret selling it, even 3 years later.

For street duty, I'd take a first gen over any other year R6. Very reliable bike that is built fairly tough.

Had an 02. They made some changes to the electrical system in 01, but 2nd gear was weak on those models. Trannys can get real expensive quick, so make sure the one your looking at shifts smoothly. Otherwise, an excellent bike, that still struts on the street and track.

The shift into second was ALWAYS clunky, but I never had it come out of gear on me. Maybe it's because it knew I had another spare transmission ready to go. I don't recall seeing too many trans issues back then, and we saw a lot of them in WERA and CCS as well as on the street. Maybe it was just something they did that affected the '02s. Mine was a '99 and we got out of racing in '01 so..... In any event, I still have a trans if anyone needs one. Just buy it and keep it in your garage, close enough to your R6 so that it can see it. It's guaranteed that it will never break then

any problems with the fact that it was carbed? I am coming from a 03 250 so I'm used to having a carbed bike.

No. I had a Factory brand jet kit in mine and it ran like a scalded ape. Started well and ran its off. It's got 37mm Keihins on it - good carbs. Most carb issues I've seen were ALL self inflicted. Poorly calibrated rejetting work was common. One of the other common issues was pinching the bowl vent hoses closed by improper routing or careless placement.

Mine was very well behaved and put the power down smoothly. No complaints. The rejetted carbs on my R6 were honestly smoother than the factory FI maps on both of the Ducati 996s I've had.

2nd gear is garbage... and i agree with Racer X this bike has been beat on for awhile now. just think if 2nd gear goes out how much are you going to drop at the shop? i would save a few more bucks and go for something newer and f I

Ok I was reading up on the 2nd gear issue and it seems like in 03 they went up to 5 gear dogs, which remedied the problem with slippage are the 03 and 01 models compatible for a transplant?
