Writing a speech on helmets...

So I need y'all's help on gathering some info.

I am giving a persuasive speech 5-7 mins on motorcycle helmets. I'm going to argue that a law has to be passed to make helmets REQUIRED. No if's or but's. No MSF or Life insurance that will allow a rider NOT to wear a helmet.

I know it's insane or dumb or 'not going to happen' but it's an argument. It's for a speech class so being realistic isnt too big a deal.

What Im asking for:

* credible websites that have figures on moto accidents, with or without helmet
* countries/states law that have the same argument I do
* info that might help my argument

I think a good 4-5 sources should be enough for 5-7 mins worth of speaking.

Thanks.

Did the exact same speech in college, but can't remember any of my sources. Look up websites for SNELL and MSF, I'm sure they have stats.

Anything can be art, but I based my 5 page paper and this oral presentation on most of the Twist The Throttle: MV Agusta episode. I would link it but the ones on youtube are different from the one I have.

^ True that... True that.

Zoom:
Im surely going to the MSF site. I think going to helmets sites would be biased...

What's the agency that has to do with national highway [....] ?

Also, is there any way to get insurance statistics as well?

Thanks.

Hmmmmmm.

If you're going to argue that helmets should be mandatory, the speech shouldn't be about safety, it should be about rights.

Most people (with at least half a brain) realize that wearing a helmet is safer than not wearing one. The question is, even though it's safer, should it be legally required?

At what point does safety override a person's legal right to make their own decisions. In other words, at what point should the governement decide what's best for us?

Just a thought.

Disclaimer:
I'm required to wear a lid. Even if I weren't, I always would. I'm not even stating which side of the fence on "mandatory helmet laws" I reside on. I'm just trying to help him out with his speech. Good luck.

Afterthought:
I had a student in last week's class whose husband told her that it had been proven that helmets caused broken necks so she shouldn't wear one. Just thought it was funny.

I figured that the 'other side of the fence' would pull out the 'rights' issue but I'm not going into a debate. I just need to state my point and 'persuade' my audience within 5-7 mins.

@urban:I have looked in my school's online databases and while they are more that sufficient sources I was hoping for some links. (like zoom gave. Thanks btw)

I think im still missing one or two government agencies that might have some info/statistics...

^^ Just like people who say seatbelts will decapitate you in a car crash...

If your going fast enough and crashing hard enough to have a fabric belt cut or rip your head off did you really think you were going to survive the same crash without one...

Anyway back on topic
http://www.webbikeworld.com/Motorcycle-Safety/crash.htm

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/portal/site...8e410dba046a0/

http://www.motorcycle-accidents.com/pages/stats.html

Try these but everyone refers back to the same NHTSA statistics...
Good Luck

Just an opinion, a lot of people consider the Hurt report too outdated and full of flaws to use in a debate. (kind of like the Bible )

NHTSA is going to have the most current statistics. Trust me, I get to listen to them EVERY frickin year. Sometimes twice a year.
