Police use Easter Bunny costume for local sting operation

police use easter bu 460x0w
Quote:
When you’re driving along a busy road with a lot of pedestrian lanes, common sense suggests that you yield when someone is about to cross the road - especially when they are dressed up as the Easter Bunny.

Apparently, motorists in Glendale, California thought differently when, in fact, a man wearing a rabbit costume walked along unmarked crosswalks. Most motorists failed to even yield to the rather strange creature in front of them.

Turns out, that creature was Glendale Police Officer Tom Broadway, who wore the attention-grabbing costume as part of a local sting operation to educate motorists on safe driving.

Yeah, we smelled set-up from the very beginning. Ok, not really. And we ended up not being the only ones who got confused with all the brouhaha. According to the cops doing the sting, around 24 citations were handed out to motorists on suspicion of failing to yield to the Easter Bunny as it walked across an unmarked crosswalk. The motorists didn’t take quite well to the whole sting, with one of them even saying that he got so confused because the bunny hopped directly in front of him.

We don’t really understand the whole point of the sting, but according to Lt. Gary Montecuollo, it was directed at educating motorists on ensuring the safety of pedestrians. “We are not here to create violations,” he said. “Quite frankly, we would be happy if everybody stopped. The idea is to generate a knowledge of safety for the pedestrian.”

Something tells me motorists in Glendale should look up the definition of entrapment. Just a thought

The rabbit is jaywalking.

From Wiki: Jaywalking is an informal term commonly used in the USA to refer to illegal or reckless pedestrian crossing of a roadway. Examples include a pedestrian crossing between intersections (outside a crosswalk, marked or unmarked) without yielding to drivers and starting to cross a crosswalk at a signalized intersection without waiting for a permissive indication to be displayed.

The officer should be arrested for jaywalking AND endangering the lives of others with his actions.

Well, with all due respect thats from Wiki TRDVET is a LEO, and on top of that he has given solid info in the past. Not saying your full of it, just want to see what Texas law specifically says.

Well, per these simplified definitions, it sounds like jaywalking since the bunny just strolled out into the street, but i dont know.

and TRDVET, if it is not in fact jaywalking, would you consider it, in your personal opinion, entrapment?

Here is something I found that happened in Austin: It is an immutable fact of urban life that drivers and pedestrians are in constant and dangerous flow among each other. And they are always in various states of awareness and pace.

Austin police are focusing on the pedestrian side of the tandem by issuing more jaywalking tickets. Jaywalking can be walking against the “don’t walk” signs or crossing a street in midblock.

Source: http://www.statesman.com/blogs/conte...aywalkers.html

Perhaps, he is claiming it is not jaywalking because a cop is breaking the law. Just like when they decide to run red-lights or speed for no reason. It is still breaking the law in my mind.

In California and Texas he would likely be hit and run by a non licensed non insured non citizen.

Could be an unmarked intersection. You still have to yield to pedestrians

I went back to re-read the OPs post, and you are correct. It states the Rabbit is crossing an unmarked crosswalk. On my initial reading, I got the impression that the rabbit was crossing elsewhere. I stand corrected!

I owe trdvet a beer!
