I freakin' hate insurance companies

So my Tuono that got damaged by overspray from some contractor has a repair bill according to the shop of over $20,000 (good estimate in my opinion) which would pretty much total the bike. Every single piece of body work, tank, tail, frame, wheels, swingarm, controls, and fairings have been damaged. The insurance company called me today and said according to their appraiser it will only cost $3,200 to fix. They said you can just replace the tank and tail and just use some sort of chemical to get the rest of the stains out. "Which chemical", I ask "I don't know", they reply. IT! So here we go again.

One thing about insurance companies, they want to make sure you pay on-time, etc., but when it is time for them to deliver, all you can hear are crickets playing in the background.

Get a second appraisal. Tell them what numbers you want to see and they can work with you.

The shop sets their labor etc. If they are getting some business etc, its money for them.

Sounds like the shop you went to didnt want to deal w it so they high-balled it to not have to touch the bike.

I see it alot w BMW; but Im just guessing, I dont know the details or the bike and what's involved.

The only way it would not be totaled is if I just picked out the damage I could live with and I'm not about to do that. It was in pristine condition. I ride it almost everyday but I do a really detailed wash on it about twice a week. The overspray was a solvent so it ate the paint and permanently stained everything else so I can't just clay bar it.

ha! nice.

Sorry for the headache, man. That sucks.
Id lawyer up over that amount of cash. Its amazing what a letter of retention from an attorney will do to an insurance adjusters tone.

then it needs to be totalled, tell the ins. co. you don't agree their estimate. and go from there. and in reality you may have to pay a deduc and go thru your ins.

and sue them to get your $ back.

Why do you think he or anyone else needs to answer to you for where / how they legally store their possessions?

Liability belongs to the the persons who caused the damage and whatever insurance company has agreed to assume their liability.

$20K sounds like a lot of money, especially if the plastics are reusable. I would think that you could get a pretty awesome custom paint job for far less. But that's not my call.

If you disagree with their insurance co estimate, you may be able to go through your own comprehensive coverage and have them recover the cost from the other company through subrogation; or hire an independent adjuster and dispute the amount yourself; or hire an attorney and sue for it.

I would think most of those parts could just be repainted, 20k sounds a little high for paint thinner getting on the bike.

Unless you had your bike appraised for 20k you will not get anywhere close to that. They will basically pay 60-70% of the bikes total value towards damages or give you a check for market value - deductible. I know it sucks but if your spending 30k on a bike you might want to make sure you protect your assets. Sorry for the situation either way.
