Going Out With A Whimper Instead Of A Bang!

Lots of KTMs died at GSS last weekend. Mine was one of them. It was due. I had just stated in a post last week that my engine was tired and getting quite slow. It won't be now.

Hmmm. The exhaust valves look okay...

The intake valves look, uh, less okay. Well, one of them looks fine, but the other is, how do you say, no longer among the living. Quite often this happens you can find the other end of the valve inside the cylinder where it has beaten the piston and head to death and perhaps trashed the cylinder as well.

Indeed. Dropped several before and they destroyed everything.

C'mon, Greg! A big bore would be illegal. I'm no cheater. I prefer to run stock, but will build when I have to, and it usually comes to that. There are other ways to get horses out of that motor, though. Still, I could use a few more horsepower so I can get the horsepower to weight ratio even with you.

Nah, I haven't seen the piston, yet. The head is still on, so I'll get to that tomorrow. But I can see the valve move through the intake port. It's still in one piece and, if it contacted the piston, it did minimal damage. I need a new piston anyway, of course.

How does the valve drop like that? Is it held up by the ring on top (retainer)?

A little, yes. In the oil and on the magnetic plug and filters. It's not really a lot, actually, but it's still a problem. It doesn't have to be a lot to cause bigger problems later. Split, flush, check, replace as required.

Yes. Only the retaining groove failed, and only then just enough to allow it to fall a bit (or, more accurately, not return after compression). It it's jammed in there, which is a good thing.

A bad crick in the neck and a camera issue, too. I shoulda stayed in bed.

Bummer, too, because after tiptoeing around the first half of the day, it was hammer time.

Update:

So the head is off and it looks perfect. It is evident that, even in the wake of the valve tip and keepers getting hammered by the rocker arm, that the valve didn't drop enough to make contact with the piston.

826646281 5ap7E XL

But, wait. At the track, when all this was happening, I came onto the front straight, and I was full into the top of third and about to shift into fourth, and the motor just shut down like a plug wire was pulled. I grabbed the clutch and pushed the kill switch. But why did the motor just nose over like that? One broken valve (when there are two) won't shut a motor down like that.

Ah-ha! Here's the answer:

826647283 N2Kee XL

826650074 4Gfza XL

826650516 DMEgw XL

826651473 t8VVk XL

This piston had a lot of hard hours on it. (Props to Mahle forged pistons! This isn't the first time I've had Mahle stay together when they should have fallen apart.) This motor was bone stock. It won't be now, suckas!

Wow you are so lucky that that piston held and the rod didn't start slapping the piston walls! Been there, done that and it sucks to replace the block!!!

You are also super lucky that the valve didn't fall completely down, that is usually a very scary couple of seconds before the motor locks up: Kaboomoffuzkohshatfuzkohshatmypants
:-)

Lucky lucky lucky!

Was watching WSBK this weekend and missing you fools out on the track :-( Glad to see the fun never ends!
