See the back of the hand is toward the recipient. This is the V for Victory symbol which is a completely different gesture than the peace sign with the palm facing the recipient.
This rude gesture is also found in France and stems from the disputes over Aquitaine. During the wars a group of English archers were defeated by the French and sent packing back to England minus their right index and middle fingers. Needless to say this the Brits off and they sent a big old group of rowdies back and kicked the Frenchies' collective (well at least in that battle). To flaunt their victory over the French they would display their two bow fingers still firmly attached to their hands. Now you have the British victory symbol and the French F you symbol.

And i feel like a nerd when i dont get a wave back, Im sensitive that way lol
