Neighbor just got a bike

Background: Neighbor has been on and off 125cc dirtbikes from ~10 -14 years old, he was kind of a hoolagan on the dirt bikes. For the last 4 years hasn't been on a bike. For the last ~ 6 months, I haven't seen much of him.

It turns out he had went to WY to work in the oil field. He keeps talking of all the money he is making on the rig. Good for him. When he came home this time, he told his Mom that he was going to purchase a sportbike, she wasn't happy, but he is 18 (almost 19). I saw him a few nights ago riding back and forth on the street between the houses on his sportbike. Today I stopped as he came by and I was on my way home.

It turns out he bought a 2007 GSXR 1000 (orange/black, just like the one I had a few months back) with 44 miles (never been registered ) from his boss ($6,000, decent deal ). He says that the boss purchased it in '08 and just never rode it. It now has 107 miles, as of this afternoon. It was a clean bike. It had a few scratches from where it appears to have been laid over on the R side (very light scratches), and some fresh ones where he dropped it on the L (also broken shifter arm and clutch lever). I will help him with that damage.

I went and spoke with his Mom and pushed for her to get him into a Motorcycle Safety Course before he starts on the roadways. I also offered to take him out to ride to get him a bit more comfortable before he gets on the roadways with heavy traffic. He looks extremely unstable and inexperienced. Plus he probably only weighs 140 lbs.

He will have to be really careful, or he is headed for a bad experience.

Thoughts?

you nailed it. there should be some sort of law for new mc riders. msf and then start on a 250/500 for the first 6 mos. then they can upgrade to a 600 for 1-2 yrs. then it's fair game. but must pass a riding test each upgrade.

i know it will never happen but it's a good thought

now hold on. if there was such a law, all the brokeass dudes like me would still be stuck on a 250/500 or some old heap.

i started on a 650 and love it. im guessing this kid took a step into the unkown when he got the liter bike. i'll help him out though. he can have my wonderful, welcoming sv in exchange for his broken gsxr1k

Im not a expert rider and still try to learn new things each time I ride to better myself.. One thing that has always puzzled me is why people try and jump to 1000cc bikes or higher for fir their first sportbike....

Let his mom and him know he has to have an M endorsement which now requires MSF...he gets pulled over without it, his bike gets towed and he can goto jail. </discussion>

Is he resistant to the idea of MSF or what?

i learned how to ride on a yz 80 back in 05 18 yrs old .. 2 weeks later got a r6 2 weeks later laid it over acting stupid.. like a yr later a car cuts me off i locked up the tires and bike washed out on me, no major damage and got lucky didnt get injured

now that i have experienced streetbike riding i actaully preach to ppl that just get into riding to take msf and get a smaller bike to learn on tooo bad i dont ever take my own advise

now n days i dont even ride streets no more but i still got my r6 and it might look like but it still rides strong

250's offer both good experiences and experiences that can save a life. to everyone that start on a big bike, i guess throttle control and ego are what they have to watch out for.

When I lost it last night, I remembered I wasnt riding by myself and slowed down. I need to remember when I am on two wheels that it takes a split second for everything to go wrong. I cant afford to let my hot head get over me and do some whoosah...

Everyone loves to bash newbie riders that come in to the game over their head.
Nobody likes to read RIP or critical wreck threads.

So I'll just skip all that cliche nonsense and say that I hope the rider has some sense to build his ability up, resraint and respect for the throttle, and lots of patience and luck.

Pretty rare but it can be done.
Good luck to your neighbor and kudos to you Aaron for trying to help the dude out.

If he likes to ride like a bat out of and act a hooligan, make sure he gets out to the track.

The cc's (250,500,600,650) for a first bike I think will always be debatable. Yes some are quick for a beginner, but some have the ability to check their ego and throttle control. Whatever.

However, I did ride my first 1K two weekends ago, and realized how completely different a bike it was, alot of power comes at any point in the RPM's. I can't see how a litre bike would be a good recommendation for a beginner at all.

Maybe talk to him about flipping the bike, and using the extra cash to get msf, gear, trackdays, etc...
