Motorbike gang rob West End jewellers Mappin & Webb in broad daylight

Passers-by stand and stare as thieves make off with 50,000 in gems

A WEST END jeweller in Piccadilly, London, was the latest victim of motorcycle-riding thieves yesterday, when a gang performed a daring smash'n'grab robbery in the middle of the day.
The gang, armed with sledge hammers, smashed their way into into Mappin & Webb's Piccadilly store in the West End, before making off with goods worth around 50,000.
The gang, made up of five men on three bikes, took less than a few minutes to take their haul. A lookout rider, on what's believed to be a KTM Duke, stands guard as the thieves make their daring raid.

A number of astonished onlookers watched the robbery take place; it's believed one man walked right past the gang as they grabbed jewels from the window. The gang then sped away through busy West End traffic on two high-power motorbikes. Visordown understands the getaway machines consisted of a 175mph GSX-R1000 and a 160mph KTM SuperDuke. The area was cordoned off by Met Police while officers carried out forensic tests. The incident is the fifth raid on a Mappin & Webb branch in London in the past three years
