It works about like this, see pic:

taken from http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/energyexpla...gasoline_where

"Gasoline Brands Get Mixed During Shipment
While gasoline is sold at about 162,000 retail outlets across the Nation, about one-third of these stations are "unbranded" dealers that may sell gasoline of any brand. The remainder of the outlets are "branded" stations, but may not necessarily be selling gasoline produced at that company’s refineries. This mixing of brands occurs because gasoline from different refineries is often combined for shipment by pipeline, and companies owning service stations in the same area may be purchasing gasoline at the same bulk terminal."

I guess I will have to find that letter.

It's not mixed AFTER shipment from the bulk terminal.......and THAT is where the additive is injected. Unbranded dealers get generic additive....(HEB/Kroeger) Branded dealers get the propietary<sp> additive. Base gas is base gas, meets the specs the Fed and local government require.....the additive is the difference. AS noted in a previous post.....the ADDITIVE is the big difference. Chevron puts in the most additive per gallon of gas........but all of the Majors are tier 1 fuels......most/best additive and best quality control.
Everyone has they're opinion on gas.....big oil is ripping us off, big oil are crooks, big oil whatever, but the fact is the majors DON'T make a ton of money at the retail level where you and I buy gas. The government makes FAR more off each gallon we buy.

the other thing to remember is that most, but not all, companies use additive packages produced by the lubrizol corp, including shell, exxon mobil, valero and others, they do have proprietary mixtures and the additive package makes the difference, the mom and pop use the least costly(cheap) and the tier 1 companies usually use the more expensive and higher concentration of additives
