Naaawwww, I spent 3 weeks down there around El Salto (west closer to Zaragoza (not on the map)) and after you get away from the border it's really peacefull and the folks are real nice.
Total, prolly spent two months around Parras and Monterey.

I was always stoped on the side of the road with a gravimeter (measures gravity with high precision) and a GPS most of the time.

Asside form all the "army" (kids with green suits and rifles) no one bothered us, and it was only two of us.

WOW that route looks fun! but that was then its not now with the gang wars going on. Stupid wars stopped us from going back this past x mas. People shooting people and throwing grenades like F'n water ballons in Michocan and this route takes you right threw the center of it all. Once it clears up i'm a do this route.

Well, I think the last time I was down there was prolly in 2005.

Hard to believe that was 5 years ago.

Are you fukin kiddin??? What the are they thinking riding a bunch of white people through Juarez and Chihuahua??!! You would have to cross Parral, San Juan, Parras, El Salto. Good luck.

Past Parral, its like going back to the 1800's. Lots of rural area infested by cartel, drug runners, bandits, kidnappers, paramilitary and the total lack of any law enforcement. And when you do come across the police, well go try and ask them for help or directions and see what happens.

I grew up in that part of Mexico and spent my fair share of time in that part of the country and have seen it all.

Make sure to write a will before you leave.

well, this is were I spent the 3 weeks in 05 (arround aramberri, zaragoza and all around that area in about a 20 mile radius. We were mostly up in the little mountain townes, little as in they bring their water up on donkeys or mules.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sour...657959&t=h&z=8

Were we just lucky?

Me and another guy camped the whole time. We were driving an 18 passanger white van. Really, I never had a problem. Only time I even felt we might have a problem, it turned out the guy was just a Jahovas Whittness and gave us some pamplets. Well, all the army kids semed a little schetchy. I don't think we even had to bribe anyone.
