For $100 you've got 4 pairs of jeans and the pads as opposed to a single pair of the others. Sure, if you've got money falling out your , fine, but if you're like some of us and have to balance your passions with real life....

I am NOT saying they are better than leather pants, but, when you have to juggle money....
Skrimping to get by sucks. I started with some paintball pants that I had from before I became a poor college student (wow, that was ten years ago, I feel old). Trust me on the goodwill stores though, way cheaper than Walmart and if you go to ritzy areas you can get some nice .

Goodwill stores are an option too.

Pants I tend to stick with jeans, but then again, i ride a cruiser, not a sport bike. Long distance slides aren't really part of the crash equation for me. Jackets, helmets and boots i do not skimp on.

Hardest part for me is finding gear which isnt festooned with logos - i HATE that .

Well I figure once I get old and wrinkly I'll just buy a Harley and a bunch of black leather so that I will be all coordinated and stuff. It's all about packaging.

FWIW I witnessed a guy lowside right in front of me on Push Mt Rd in AR at about 60mph. He was wearing work boots, wranglers relaxed fit and a mesh jacket... He slid 100 feet and off the side of the moutain... bike was trashed, mesh jacket was trashed, wranglers werent even ripped (and he slid a good ways on his )

Meh - depends on the cut. I tend to go for the more relaxed fit so "the boys" aren't QUITE so much on display...

Did you see the video on youtube where the guys leather chaps came loose at the bottom, wrapped around the rear and locked it up on the freeway. He said he made his 1st bike payment a few days after getting out of the hospital.

IndyRC - I saw you eyeing my Harley vrod, you know you want one.

He said they were a gift and were a little loose so were flapping in the wind, that caused them to come unzipped. He said when he felt them come loose and was headed to the shoulder to stop and fix.

When I didnt had riding pants, i used 2 sets of jeans... actually bought a pair on sales at a Gap store 2 sizes bigger for about $7... you cannot beat that.
Although, I do suggest to get some knee pads $20 that will save a lot on the run.. 0.02

Go to Plato's Closet or Goodwill and buy two pair of jeans for about $25 (25 together, not each), then wear them both at the same time. You're warm and you're protected. Oh yeah, don't forget knee pads!

Get some True Religion or Rock and Republic's. At close to $300 a pair they have to be bulletproof right?

Dude, I demolished my R1 in summer of 08. All I had on was T-shirt, Levis 527 jeans, Converse all star tennis shoes, and a Shoie helmet. I ended up hurt very badly, and broke a bunch of bones. The jeans were un scathed except for where the EMT cut them off to see my femur sticking out of my thigh. buy Levis.

Sucks that you wrecked bad, femure damage HURTS. Your jeans were intact cause you didn't strike the ground and slide with all of your momentum applying pressure to your legs/knees. Take it from an EMT, if you hit knees first (which happens alot, really)those jeans would be shredded if you had slid over the concrete at high speed on them. Shoot, even leather gear can let you down sometimes. Levis are made of fairly heavy material though, which would obviously be the best type of fabric to aim for when purchasing riding jeans. I think that Levis would be a good pick actually, if he can find them cheap somewhere (plus kneepads!).
