Hauling Your Bike

Just curious as to how many people here that dont have trucks have hitches hooked up to their cars to transport their bikes???? I was looking into buying me a truck but at the same time I was thinking I could save a lot of money by just installing a hitch to my car (chevy impala) and buy a small trailer to get my bike where it needs to be. I dont do track days or anything so the main use would be to take my bike to the shop when I need to or if something was to happen instead of asking and waiting around on other people... So who have hitches on their car??????

I used my Mazda3 wagon to haul my bike to the track a few times. I don't have a bike anymore though

I've seen a civic pull a moto and trailer once.. I figure it's almost the same as driving around with a few fat people in the back of your ride.

i had an RSX with a hitch on it to tow my bike around. It was a 6 speed so it made it a little bit easier on the tranny. You get some funny looks though.

Towing shouldnt be too bad. It will all lie in maintaining the car/tranny. If you have an A/T car, it might be wise to invest on a bigger tranny oil cooler. I dont think the manual tranny's use oil coolers but that wouldnt be too bad a mod.

I am actually thinking about this for the corolla as well.

Should work fine as long as you don't try and pull a 16 ft lowboy.

Another option is to get three or 4 buddies together and all pitch in for a foldup trailer and a couple hitches.. would be dirt cheap then. They are cheap anyhow. If all you plan to use if for is bikes, get the bolt on rails and set them up for quick release so you can still fold up the trailer. 3/4 or 1/2 plywood adds considerable weight to the trailer.

The small 4x8 trailers don't weigh much without the wood, probably 300 lbs. Add the 400 lbs bike and you have a couple fat people....

true but the auto tranny issues are not on just civics but most hondas. the key is to change the atf fluid often.

As posted Dave C used his Civic; I've seen a 350Z and a S4 doing so. I have a hitch on my A4 and it works just fine. I've pulled two dirt bikes; also my R6 regularly. For 2010 I expect to haul my R6 and a baby ninja for a couple of events, let see how that works.
U-haul can install the towing kit and it costs around 400 dollars; a small new trailer (4x6) should cost around 450 bucks.
