On locking threads

Could we start making it SOP that whatever mod decides to lock a thread post in it before locking to state why it's being closed? This would hopefully prevent others from posting threads asking why X thread was locked and allow them to simply PM the mod if they feel they really need to say something about it. I see this done on other forums I'm on and it seems to work well.

good idea, but...i have my doubts they'll do it.
There doesnt seem to be a urge on the part of mods to let their decision and actions to be transparent to the members. Its their choice, but it doesnt project a very good image.
I mean, we also have a couple mods that like to stay logged on as invisible, and i dont see the point in that.

Getting pm after pm of people asking you do edit/delete/whatever stuff when they see that your on, gets old fast. I don't mind helping people out, but there is a report post button. People need to learn how to use it. $.02

I don't typically post in a thread when I lock it for a couple reasons. Sometimes I catch it low on the new posts link and don't want to bump it and bring any further attention. People often gripe we were trying to get the "last word" when we post then lock, or vice versa. Also, and the main reason, I like my anonymity. If someone disagrees with why I locked the thread I'd rather them take it to an administrator and voice their opinion instead of getting into a personal debate with me on why I'm locking their thread(s). I do see your point and in some cases where a thread is in blatant violation I, and the other mods, will post in it and lock, but when I have to use discretion that others may or may not agree with I tend not to make it obvious is was me who locked the thread.

There's a lot of bs/pointless threads that float around this forum...out of all those threads, very few get locked...it's pretty simple to just go back and skim the thread real quick and see why it was closed

just my .02

Yep, that's true too. For using common sense and understanding, you get one gold star

No one is forcing anyone to post on here.

If you dont like it, go post elsewhere.

I still think post counts shouldnt be shown. Would stop alot of the "I gotta get to 1k...5k...10k... " You need to get the fk out of the house and go ride.

lol, no, not at all. Well, everyone's kind of a in their own rights, but not from being/not being a mod/administrator

Yeah, that makes sense, and I've seen that before too. You also run into situations though where a thread has a mod or maybe more that are participating in the conversation that later gets locked, which also kind of gives the impression that they're just tryingto silence opposing view points. I guess it's just like everything else, where there's no one way that will make everybody happy. Just thought it was worth suggesting and letting you think about. Is there anyway to give mods an option to post as anonymous when locking? So that they can still drop a post and lock it without anyone knowing who it was?

I don't want to stir , so I'm not going to mention the thread that made me want to mention this, or even when it was closed, but though some people and remarks got a little heated, there was still valid conversation happening, and it seemed unnecessary as a lock. Perhaps a couple warnings or deleted posts? Maybe at that point it was too far along to handle that many posts...dunno. Just throwing it out there.

As far as being invisible doesn't bother me any. Sometimes you have to lurk.
