He has no need to ask 2800. You can only ride this bike for "offroad" purposes and you will never own it.

oh no if i bought it from him i'd get a bill of sale and then part the whole bike out and sell it asap. if anything ever happened i'd show them the bill of sale and say he sold it to me for parts i never knew he didnt pay for it /shrug

but then again i dont have the time or the knowledge to do that so oh well :P

you're buying a stolen bike when you do that. the bank is the rightful owner, and they will report it stolen. when you get busted with it, guess who goes down for it?

It's theft for the seller and receiving stolen goods for the buyer.

but... if he gives you the bike to work on... and then says he can't pay you, then you do a mechanics lien, that is not stealing. But he'd have to GIVE you the bike to work on, not that you'll give him $500 to let you work on his bike then file a lien

pertains ONLY to actual business. If you don't have a business, you are part of the problems.

100%. Mechanics lien required a signed work order with business heading/invoice. If a bank or lienholder comes to your place of business to retrieve or estimate the item/vehicle, and there is no business, someone is gonna get trouble. People this is 2010, your best scams is with the internet or electronically. The mechanic's lien is a century old.

the mechanic's lien would also have to be filed against the dude's bank, not him, because the bank is the registered owner of the bike. and you can be sure, they're not just going to let you get away with it.
