Suspension setup

I was mounting some race take offs on a guys bike last night and since he was new to the scene he asked to look over his bike. Upon bouncing on it the suspension was stiff as . Everything was one click off full hard pretty much. There was no way the shock was doing anything other than punching him in the at every bump, which he confirmed.
Turns out he had PAID for this diservice at one of our motorcycle shops in town!
Guys stop paying idiots to "setup" your suspension. If you need help with spring rates and preload/sag settings understandable, but as far as damping goes it's not that hard. There are two settings. Compression slows the down stroke and rebound slows the up stroke. Find out where they are adjusted on you bike. There's only like 10 clicks on a stock bike find one that works for you, it's going to be somewhere in the middle. If you have to crank it to full hard to feel the damping, it's time to get serviced with new fluid.

Compression is easier to feel. Find a setting that feels good when you bounce down on the bike, then find a rebound setting that rebounds at about the same speed. You also want the bike to be balanced front to back in the speed it compresses and rebounds. If your at a trackday ask any white plate racer to have a bounce and see what they think. Also ask to bounce on their bike to see what it should feel like.
