07 ZX6R valve cover gasket replacement-Q&A

Ok so when I recently bought my zx6R i already knew it had the imfamous kawasaki valve cover gasket leak. Ive done some research on zx6r, zx and kawiforums to find out that it was a bad gasket that kawasaki originally put in. I ordered the "new and improved" gasket from the dealer and already have the bike torn down all the way to the throttle bodies. The manual says to remove them but it doesnt look like i have to..any body have any experience with doing this? Gasket wont be here till next week so I have some time.

Also read that you can remove the secondary butteryflies like on the ZX14for better throttle response, is this true? Any input is greatly appreciated...

Im also going to change the spark plugs while im in there...any other items i should change?

Yea supposedly kawsaki fixed it by coming out with a revised gasket. I read that some guys kept getting thier bikes fixed with the old gasket that still made it leak....some of the dealers didnt know anything about the new gasket and Kawaskai with all thier wisdom kept shipping the bad ones out till they were nomore...

My zx14 has the same problem, just not as bad..The valve cover bolts are to long and they bottom out before they can put enough pressure on the gasket to make a good seal...fix is to add washers to all the valve cover bolts..but i will fight that battle when i get my valves adjusted

Did quite a few when I was at kawi lol. Leave the throttle bodies on but you will have to negotiate the valve cover out from in between the frame so be patient. Also be sure to seal it up with kawabond or similar product or I promise u will be doin this again. How many miles are on the bike?

yes it's an oem gasket sealer/maker. works wonders. And at 3500 miles everything else should be fine but go ahead and check the air filter and make sure the throttle bodies are 100% open at wot, if not adjust cables.

I wouldn't remove the files on that bike, it will really make it very sensitive to on/off throttle input.

Good to know. Yea just saw someone in the forums mention it but didn't see everyone saying it's a must have like on the zx14. So I will leave the flies alone thanks for the input fellas and hopefully it will go without a hitch....

Update.... I ended up putting the bike back together after calling the dealer. There is a recall which requires a kit (from what I was told has multiple seals) to be replaced on these in order to fix it. Kit is only available for the dealers service dept. Even though the bike is 3 years old with no warranty they still took it in to fix under the warranty work!! now all I got to do is wait a month to probably get it back.

I don't know about all of them, but quite a few were. I think it was a certain range from the manufactured month. Like the ones made from Feb07-Aug07. I believe you can check the VIN number on Kawi's website. Or just call a dealer with the VIN.

I was thinkn u were replacing it with the new revised gasket kit. The only other seals are the ones for the spark plug holes and ones that go under the valve cover bolts. We had a hard time getting the gaskets even when they first put out the service bulletin, they were like 2 weeks backordered. Which dealer did u take it to?

Yea it's 07-08 zx6r if I read right. Basically they only change the gasket if there is a leak. They can look up the Vin to see if it has been done already.

I took it to mancuso-clear lake Kawasaki (that's not in clear lake anymore )
