Buy American

Listening to the radio this morning Paul Harvey mentions Ford's new ad campaign for the new Mustang, and how it's saying that it's patriotic to buy American. He then says that the Ford Mustang is 65% American made, while say a Toyota Sienna is 90% American made. Go figure. I haven't seen any of the ads yet.

I've been trying to figure out what exactly qualifies to have a Made in the USA label, but it's just a bit too confusing.

I am more concerned with where it is engineered than where it is assembled. Any monkey can zip a bolt in with an pneumatic tool and get the desired result and if it means I really do "buy American" then so be it if it makes people happy.
On another note...
For some reason, American auto engineers cannot seem to get things right and think things through designwise. Sure all auto companies have their recalls and such but I really don't like the functionality of American designs. I think that they are wastefull by nature and they don't utilize space and technology like a Japanese engineer does. They have a different mindset due to the limitations that they live with on a daily basis. Having been to Japan and staying there for a while, I got to see all kinds of great engineering feats. Some of the stuff that they come up with is awesome.

America was on top of the world back in the 1960s...but the time has passed. People have changed, we are spending a lot of money on cars these days and we want something very dependable, gets great gas mileage and has some good power. The Big 3 haven't produced anything that fits that to this date.

the made in the USA label only requires the end product to have been made in the USA. For instance, if you are selling a car all of the parts could have been made elsewhere and most of the subassemblies assembled elsewhere but if you do the final assembly in the states you can slap a made in the USA label on it.

Now if you are selling the same say spark plug that goes in that car but you are selling it as a part and it was made elsewhere you cannot describe it as made in the USA.

The made in the USA is actually a big problem especially for defense contractors. There is a requirement that all steel be US even down to the bolts. The problem is that the US has not enforced it and only recently began requiring contractors to prove it. This is difficult if not impossible for the top level contractor-because they have subcontractors, who have sub contractors, etc. This can go down five levels easily and to get someone that low down to provide the documentation that all their parts are US is a problem because often when purchasing them you have no idea if its a COTS product with only US parts.

Americans need to get over this idea about only supporting americans because we are only hurting ourselves. Subsidizing farmers for example. Or taxing steel imports or ethanol imports!!! Go read about brazilian ethonal production vs american. We spend more energy to make american ethanol than it can actually produce. Brazilian ethanol can release more energy than it takes to produce and can be made cheaper. It is more expensive in the States though than the american ethanol because we put tariffs on it.

Sorry to say but it's the demise of the future of America if we don't get it under control soon. You can thank Union's and most of their workers for that.

yeah, back in the day, lee Iacoca revitalized Chrysler with the same strategy. back when the imports were rocking and all american made cars sucked (80's) he used that campaign and it worked then, dunno now though
