Proper gear dude, might have changed the outcome. Hope you pull through and learn a lesson.

http://www.kbtx.com/home/headlines/79906932.html

A major accident this afternoon in Bryan leaves a motorcyclist in critical condition.

Police say it happened just after 11 a.m. at the intersection of North Texas Avenue and Old Hearne Road.

Jack Griffin, 63, of Bryan was headed east on Old Hearne Road toward the intersection of North Texas Avenue, when he struck a van headed south on Texas.

Griffin was not wearing a helmet and was taken to St. Joseph Regional Health Center for treatment. The hospital says he's in critical condition.

The accident caused traffic to back up in all directions over the lunch rush hour, but it has since reopened.

The investigation is ongoing.

I read that report - someone commented the van ran a red light! That's probably my biggest fear on the street...

I don't doubt it one bit. Idiots around here are fcking notorious for not being patient enough to just wait a few minutes. 2009 has seen 4 motorcyclist killed just blocks from my house. It's ridiculous.

big curve on 306 by 2673 - maybe taken too fast - or maybe since there's lots of deer... wonder if there was some kind of target fixation... that's such a beautiful area.

RIP

It sucks.
I totalled 2 bikes in Bryan from people running reds. Same street, too.

The facts are 87% of the time a car and a motorcycle are in an accident it is the falt of the automobile. The helmet is designed for an accident up to 17 mph and no more so after that speed a helmet does not protect you, it can also add to the injuries by compounding the bouncing of the brain in the skull. It is illegal to wear a helmet in a car because it impairs sight and hearing. The best way found to reduce deaths and injuries to motorcycle riders is by constant public service announcments by radio, billboards, news papers, TV, and magazines. This was tried in one state for a year the results were a 50% reduction in deaths of motorcycle riders, Share The Road. A person who is aware and not distracted wheather in a car or on a motorcycle will reduce accidents and deaths for all. Failure to yield right of way is one of the leading causes of traffic accidents so this is why the fines for failure to yield are now so high $500 to $2000. Pay attention and help reduce accidents and death.
Taken from the comments section of the KBXT website, WTF?

Helmets are designed for impacts, not speed ratings. You can come off the bike at speeds and never touch your head.

Say what you want, helmet no helmet, gear no gear,

your only going to find me riding my bike with my Full Face Helmet, Gloves, Motorcycle padded jacket, Padded Blue Jeans, Gloves and Boots.

So many ways to die in this world it isnt going to be because I wasnt wearing my gear, my Bomberman's Leather Jacket, Blue jeans and Steal Toed boots saved my life when I wrecked my Jeep. And I was wearing my seatbelt and still managed to fly 80 yards from the impact at about 55 mph to the guard rail due to some idiot cutting my lane too close.
