So I killed a vulture this morning...

Or whatever those big huge birds that eat roadkill are called. I decided to do a quick forest/3090 run this morning since it was awesome out and it wasn't supposed to rain until later this afternoon. So I run through the forest, hit the left after the fake gas station, and take the right onto 2817 I think? I'm going down that road at a pretty good pace, not going to post the speed on here , then on the right side of the road I see these two big huge birds taking apart some roadkill. The first one flies up and to the right, so I'm like, cool, they're getting out of my way. The second one flies right into my path and I was so startled I probably screamed a couple of choice words in my helmet. My right elbow/shoulder area hit that thing so hard, it felt like someone slingshotted a 30 lb. medicine ball right at me. Those birds are freakin heavy!! It knocked my right arm off the throttle! I was like, wtf, so I slow down and I look in my mirror to see behind me...when I realize my right mirror is completely missing and the part that holds it is bent all the way down. I stopped and realized the bird hit my mirror first, THEN my right shoulder. I turned around and saw the bird in the middle of the road, and kicked it a couple of times to see if it was still alive. It didn't move at all, so I moved it off the road with my foot and started looking for my mirror. Some lady that lives on the side of the road came running down her driveway yelling, "Are you hurt at all? Are you ok?" I talked with her for a little bit, she said she was taking her dogs out and she heard me coming and that's when she saw the bird fly right into my bike. She saw the bird flip in the air and land right on the ground. I went back to look for my mirror and I think I found it...well, at least pieces of it...I found 1 big piece of mirror and 2 smaller pieces. I didn't bother looking for the rest and just left the pieces there. There's this huge patch if white on the right side of my leathers with some tiny feather fuzz lodged on the seams, my right mirror is gone, there are little chunks of paint missing from the right upper fairing and gas tank, but that's about it. I'll have to order a new mirror and I'm not too worried about the paint. Now that I think about it, I kept my eyes open when I hit the thing and all I could see was feathers from the wing and I think I may have caught a glimpse of his claw. I kinda chilled the rest of the ride but I was wondering what do you guys think is the best thing to do when you see those vultures on the side of the road? Everytime I've passed them, they've always flown the opposite direction, I never thought one of them would fly in my path. Do you guys just slow down, or speed up, or start yelling in your helmet hoping they'll hear you and get out of the way?

CLIFF NOTES:
1) Went on a forest/3090 run
2) Hit a big black bird and killed it
3) Wondering what you do when those birds are in the way

Or in the head and break your neck.

A friend of mine (Vittorio, Ed, you may know him) got lifeflighted because a deer jumped in front of him while riding back roads, I know you cannot compare a deer with a vulture, but the result could've been the same.

Glad to hear you're okay though. Watch out for the birds next time, they probably have you on some vulture hit list now!

buy a bigass Harley touring bike, then they will be just another bug splatter on the windshield.
my son hit a racoon, he was on his brake trying to slow down so when his front tire got on the racoon the wheel stopped turning and the racoon was stuck under the tire, sliding down the road. Then he dropped the bike and the racoon ran off.
Animals are unpredictable. You did good, slow down, do not over react, bring your bike to a safe stop, inspect damage, count your blessings.

^^^

It should be 2nd Nature to know that you should not be on the brakes when you are about to go over any road debris???

If you chose to use the brakes while hitting something use the rear.

Last time one flew up I ducked behind the fairing and "just" missed him... I hate them stupid birds.. I had 2 near misses on one ride...

Just roll off the gas and lay on the horn and they seem to go the other way.

Dude... you go and say I'm riding on the street like an idiot, when I didn't see you on the street anywhere near me? Who says I was riding like an idiot? You don't know me, you don't know the way I ride, and you make a judgement based on a story I told. It's not like I said, oh look, there's a couple birds, I'm going to try and hit them just for the fun of it. The point was, the bird flew into my path and I was just wondering if it's happened to anyone else and what you can do about it. I didn't speed up, I did slow down but by that time the bird was already in the air, and no it didn't hit me dead center in the chest and it would've hit the bike before hitting any part of me. But whatever, I'm guessing you're the type of person who likes to make pre-judgements about people without ever meeting them or talking to them. Have a nice day.

If you ride backroads enough, you'll see and dodge all kinds of wildlife. I don't think they hear the exhaust quick enough and realize the speed we go.. I meant Speed Limit of course.

I've seen vultures, cranes (big dumb f-ker waited until I was almost there, then cut across the road about 3 ft high.. close), turtles, coons, deer, squirrels, cats, dogs, cows... I loose count.

Just part of the game of riding in the country versus to and from work.
