Reading Spark Plugs

I searched, but couldn't find anything on the forum. I changed my spark plugs last weekend and they looked really dark (rich maybe?), but they have over 15K on them. The clean spark plug is from the same cylinder as the dirty one next to it, but with only 400m. I sometime get a back fire when jumping from mid throttle mid load to clutch in idle. I also get pretty crappy mileage ~37MPG at 74MPH, but that maybe more due to the K&N filter and the Cobra pipes. They look a lot darker in real life than in the pictures. Any constructive comments would be appreciated.

A bit rich, but not out the ordinary for 15k miles on a Shadow.

You could probably do a fuel screw adjustment and possibly a needle adjustment to clean it up a bit and get better mileage without sacrificing performance / driveability.
I'd have to ride the bike to tell you what I recommend.

Cool, I will see about bringing the bike by next week. The 15K was on the plugs. The bike has 36K.
I will look in the repair manual for fuel screw adjustment. Needle adjustment? I thought one had to change them to get a different mixture.

It does have a jet kit, but I haven't touched the carb/jets before. Should I bring the kit with me?

Not necessary.
If it has a jet kit then the needles are adjustable, also do not set the fuel screws at what the manual says but at what the jet kit says.
Keep in mind they're a baseline setting.
