Leaving the track to race the dirt. What to do?

Well, the time has come for me to say so long to track riding. After much thought and consideration, I have decided that the amount of $$$ I spend doing trackdays (plus all the $$$ for tires, maint., etc.) is just too much. So, I am considering racing on some dirt next season with the STORM series.

http://www.storm-racing.org/page/page/7139965.htm

There is an annual $25 membership fee, a one time purchase of a transponder for timing purposes for $20, and then there is a race fee of $45 per race, which is a pretty good price considering it covers Saturday practice and the Sunday race as well. So, I could do these races once a month and probably come out WAY cheaper than doing 10-15 trackdays per season.

2010 STORM Series events:

January 16-17 Consolidated Ranch (Near La Grange)
February 20-21 Brunesmill (Just North of Columbus)
March 20-21 Skull Creek (Just South of Columbus)
April 17-18 Centerville (Right outside Centerville)
May 22-23 Middleton (Near Centerville)
June - July Summer Break and a non series event will be held date and location to be announced
August 21-22 Cowboy Badlands (Beaumont Area)
September 18-19 Lake Sam Rayburn (Near San Augustine)
October 16-17 Outlaw Trax (Huntsville/Conroe Area)
November 20-21 TO BE ANNOUNCED
December 4-5 Consolidated Ranch (Near La Grange)

Whatcha think? Will it be cheaper than td's? More fun? Will my KX250 handle the abuse if I keep up the maintenance?

The one thing I like the most is that you aren't obligated to do every race and standings don't matter much to me. I have 3 or 4 buds running this series next season and I'm SO tempted to join.

If you need someone to take over that 750 of yours i would be more than happy to *take* it off your hands.

Good luck on the dirt

Is your KX two stroke? I know, dumb question probably, but i am a Honda person as far as ATV's go.

If not, 4 strokes are expensive to work on if you can't do it yourself.

My only experience though is with Quads.

Well, according to my buds I would be too fast for the beginner class, but where does one start?

I too worry about the potential doc bills, but I'm stupid slow on the dirt so it shouldn't be an issue (plus I'm 100% covered now with my HSA account reaching my deductible for my insurance plan).

A plus is that they (STORM series) are raffling off a brand new KTM 300. Only those who attend every event are eligible to win.

Street riding isn't an option right now as I act like a hooligan on the streets. Just trying to cut out one major expense and fill that void with something a little cheaper and still as much fun (street riding won't do it for me now that I have experienced the track). Winning won't matter, I just wanna have fun with it.

KX is a two stroke...I know I'm at a dissadvantage right there (vs. the new 4 strokes out there), but it would just be for fun. If I win something in the process, so be it.

Exp. dirt racers...how often would I be looking into top ends if I participated in each 2 day event? every 3 events? mid year? I don't know what the life expectancy of a top end is when it's beat on all the time?

2700 obo for the track bike, I'll be making a thread in the coming days. remember..cash talks, BS walks.

I say go for it. I grew up on dirt, and would welcome the opportunity to ride dirt again.

But with all that being said, I have been on dirt tracks, and trackdays, I still enjoy the street (and yes, I can be a bit of a hooligan at times).

I'm a young buck...still under the dirty 30.

I know it's a very riggorous (sp?) sport, but I keep a cool head on when riding the trails. and I crash well.

I am looking to do sort of the same thing that you are doing. I never did track days, but i rode the street. I had to sell the bike, or i guess chose to. The streets are dangerous, and the wife wasn't keen on it with a family in our near future.

So i am looking to race dirt as well. But i am going the quad route. I use to dabble on them as a kid and they were fun. I am looking at picking up an old two stroke as well. I know i won't be as competitive as the newer 4 strokes. but old school 2 smokes ROCK. and rebuilds are MUCH CHEAPER.
