New Motorsports Complex To Open In League City!

That's what you would have heard on the local news back in late 1990 and into 1991. A group of investors calling themselves Race Marketing Inc., announced that they were planning to build a new motorsports complex in League City, and this news set the League City area (and areas surrounding) abuzz. The name of the place was going to be "Lone Star Motorsports Park". The complex was to have a 3.0 mile high-bank tri-oval, a variable 1.7 to 4.7 mile road course, a motocross track, an off-road track, a paved half-mile oval, a quarter mile dirt track, a 10-story office building with a motorsports industrial park, a museum, and complete campground facilities. At the time the folks investing in this track appeared to be "for real", and were said to be in the thick of satisfying the environmental concerns of the local residents. They claimed the road course was to be operational by the fall of 1991, and sometime that year, they even had Indy car legend Johnny Rutherford come down to give a speech to attract investors. I never knew exactly why it didn't happen, but most of the stories I heard back then centered around the operation to be a clever money-grabbing scam, however I also heard other things like environmental impact assessments were rejected and necessary permits could not be obtained.

(Coincidentally, there's a Lone Star Motorsports Park near Sealy, Texas, that was built since the collapse of this League City proposal in the early 1990s, but I have no idea if they are connected to these League City plans or not.)

Here's what the facility was planned to look like:

Tease.

In other news, Liberty Motorsports Park should be breaking ground any day now.
