what parts can I take off a "totalled by insurance" bike?

after being wrecked, the bike is sitting in a repo lot. it's been totalled by the insurance. what parts-mods-upgrades can I take off the bike before the ins picks it up? what do they expect on the bike; parts wise? I wanna strip it down to the bare minimum

Believe you gotta have a part to replace it.
An x friend's daughter totalled her car, we went to the lot to pull the radio, he had to put the stock radio back in.

First he had permission from the ins co, we went there then he checked in at the impound lot, dunno what transpired there.
Kinda doubt they'll just let you guys go to town, lol.
Let us know, gl

Usually the repot lot wont let you take anything off. If there are aftermarket parts on and the insurance adjusted the value b/c those parts are on the bike, then you cant take them off since you already got paid for them. If you want to take them off then the ins. co. wil give him less money.

It could also be a case by case issue.

They do NOT take kindly to insurance fraud. The bad thing for your friend is they have already seen the bike. Usually storage lots will not let you go in the yard because they want you to pay for the bike. Its how they make their money.

That's theft, plain and simple.
What they'll do about it is bring charges of insurance fraud and possibly theft.
They WILL also cancel his policy for committing the fraud which would make it damned near impossible to get insurance of any kind going forward without it costing an arm and a leg.

Jason,
I'd have him call the insurance co. to see what they agree to.
As previously stated, if your friend was compensated for aftermarket parts that were on the bike, he can't remove them, it's double dipping.

On the other hand, if the parts were not compensated for or used to figure the value of the motorcycle, he can remove them but has to replace them with the oem component. For example if he has Pazzo levers but was not compensated for them he can remove them and reinstall the oems.

Salvage companies / auction yards pay the insurance company for the bike, and how much they pay is based on a detailed description of the bike and accessories, pics of the bike by the adjuster and the owners statements of what the bike has.
When the salvage company receives the bike, if it's not what it was represented to be it will cause issues for your buddy, especially since it's been in a "controlled environment" at the storage lot.

I am quite sure you cant strip the whole bike down. You might be able to take the muffler if you put the stock back on. You might be able to get the power commander if it had one b/c they wont even know what it is.
