Every now and then I head to Sportsman's when I am itching to pop a few caps for "stress therapy". Do IDPA open practice nights at Eastex but haven't attended one at Sportsmans, yet.

Best handgun would be a Glock, it's ugly so you don't have to worry about dropping it or scratches, it's plastic and coated so no worries about rust, has minimal moving parts to collect dirt, and has one safety which is the trigger when you need it. It's also relatively cheap, reliable, and accurate. For CCW, grab a 23 or the .357SIG version, .45ACP 30/36 if you want big daddy. The .40/.357 platform can be converted to 9mm for practice with some success, so $150 extra for the cheaper 9mm capability. I did not do the conversion since reliability has mixed reviews, instead I picked up a 9mm Glock for more practice time to match my .40.

Also depending on what type of activity you are doing a revolver might make more sense. The snubnosed J frame S&W 340PD is lighter than a Glock 26/27, feels skinnier except for the cylinder bulge, but it's about the same size. Reloads are guaranteed to be slow but those 5 shots might be all that's needed. Hammerless as well so just point and squeeze for it to go off and no worries of it jamming under somewhat normal circumstances. The trrigger is DAO with a long travel to prevent accidental discharges, unlike the Glocks minimal striker travel needed for it to go bang... The 340PD is rated for .357mag rounds and can shoot any .38special rounds with ease, the .357 rounds are a blast in the thing!

As for Kimbers, follow that 1911forum link above in the thread, plagued with problems unless you get one of the first generations "classics" instead of the Series II. Dan Wesson would be another maker as well as Rock River Arms, I don't know if S&W is making smaller pistols yet based on the 1911 platform or not but their quality and warranty are first rate. The problem with the 1911 is mainly weight, cured with Scandium material by S&W... then you have the 6-8rd capacity for the Gov'ment frame. SVI/STI's are nice but are pricey and require some work with the mags and loads to get them 100% reliable.

I couldn't make it out to the gunshow this weekend but I too am looking to get the Glock 19. I went tonight to the local Basspro shop to pick one up but I need to change the address on my license. It's always something.

Anyhow. We had the gun picked out as well as a new handgun safe and some amo but, I was looking for the safe that recognizes a person or persons hand print(s) Basspro did not offer this safe.

Anyone seen one of these around?

Mines bigger...

If you want to use the fullsize G17 mags you can get a gripper extension that slides over the mag body to fill in the gap. Might make range sessions more pleasant if the hump in the handle offends you. If you have the plastic sights, steel replacements should be sought as the front can melt/fall off and the rear can slide a little with a stern finger pressure. Of course this upgrade can come at a later date if and when you do have a problem.
