Vrod vs Sportster

This is a letter written by a guy on the XL list(sporty) who said he outran a VROD and everybody called BS on him, so this is his response letter:
I thought it was interesting, he went through all this mathmatical to back up his claim

Hey Guys,
I just found some data that supports my contention
(and personal ovservations) that a Sporty can beat out
a VRod. You may remember that I made this claim a few
posts back and several of you jumped on me saying that
this could not be. I say balderdash...It can happen.

The VRod data that I'll be quoting comes from the
Jan/Feb issue of Hog Tales page 35. The Sporty data
comes from my Dyno runs on my own modified Sporty.
The VRod is a stock 2006 VSRC(1130cc). My Sporty is a
2004 XL1200R with SE Air Filter and Supertrapp 2 into
1 pipes, Dyno'd for F/A Ratio of 13:1 and Exhaust
system tuned for max torque at 3250 rpm.

The VRod's weight is given as 600 lbs and the Sporty's
weight is 558 lbs. At 3500rpm, the Sporty's
Torque/Weight Ratio is 0.129:1 and the VRod's is
0.105:1. Note that the Sporty's is about 23% more torque/weight at that rpm. The Sporty also develops more HP at 3500rpm than does the VRod (42 for the VRod vs. 48 for the Sporty for an HP/Weight advantage of 23%). Given that the VRod is a heavier bike, the HP/Weight ratio also favors the Sporty. All this converts to a faster Sporty (at the start, anyway).

At 6000rpm, the Sporty has achieved Max HP of 74 while
the VRod is still climbing at about 74 also.
Given the lighter weight and greater torque, the
Sporty should achieve max HP sooner than the VRod.
At max HP, the VRod beats the Sporty with about 110HP
compared to 74 but by then, the race is over.

Because of the greater amount of torque, particularly
at the low end and the greater amount of HP (also at
the low end) and the lighter weight of the Sporty, the
tuned Sportster should beat the stock VRod.

On the road, my Sporty DID IN FACT leave the VRod in
the dust. I don't know for sure, but I think the
Sporty would beat the VRod in the 1/4 mi.

Finally the VRod lists for $16,295 while the Sporty
lists for $8,595.

Gimmy a Sporty anyday, anytime, anyway.

this is a response from a vrod owner:

before you make a money bet on it, the Vrods flywheels are a lot less heavy than those in the sportster engine. that will make the Vrod rev faster (just like the buell X1, S1, M2, ...will outrun a tuned sportster that makes just as much power and torque as those buell's) and also, if you dragrace a Vrod with your sportster, the Vrod rider only needs to let the clutch slip at around 7000rpm for a pull that will make you feel like standing still. maybe if you would cut off some weight of those sportster flywheels (it will cost you a little torque in the low rpm range) it would rev fast enough to keep up with a Vrod, just don't bet on it.

and yet another reply that makes sense:

You can not compare engine torque values on different bikes with different final drive ratios. Torque is very much misunderstood by many. If you calculate the torque values through the primary drive, transmission, final drive and rear tire dia.to where the rubber meets the rode. Then you can compare those torque values, the bike that makes the most torque where the rear tire meets the rode if the both bikes are the same weight will accelerate faster. The easier way to compare is look at horse power curves of each engine in their operating rpm range. A Vrod or 600cc sport bike when ridden hard by a decent rider will probably not see less than 5000 rpm. The Vrod has approx 40% lower final drive than the Sportster both in 5th gear. When both bike are running 3500 rpm in 5th gear the Vrod is still making more torque where the rubber meets the road. The Vrod is also running slower than the Sportster so if he speeds up the same ground speed as the Sportster the Vrod will be turning 4600 to 5000 rpm. Now compare the engine horse power of the Sportster at 3500 rpm and the Vrod at 4700 rpm then factor bike weight in and see how they compare now also look what happens to horse power up to both bikes engine red line from these points.

Either that V-Rod owner had his bike for only a day and knew nothing of it or he's just a plain, crappy rider.
