Into Bondage
Aaron Douglas’ painting, Into Bondage, was completed 1936. It is a two dimensional representational abstract painting painted with oil on canvas. I chose this painting because it was full of meaning. It wasn’t just a portrait or a painting with different colors, almost every object symbolized something.
Starting with the basics, the painting took place in a forest with a sea near by. It seems to be late spring early summer in the time of slavery. There are trees on the outline of the painting with people walking towards the sea. Coming to the land is a ship as the sun is setting with a star that is shining a bright light on one of the people.
I think these images all symbolize something. I think the people were slaves because they had shackles on and were painted a dark color. The slaves are looking towards the ship as if it is coming for them. Even though they are tied up and know they are going to go on that ship and still be slaves at another place, they seem to be strong and keep it together. You can conclude this because even though they are faced towards the sea they are standing straight up looking towards the light. The light seems like its giving them some hope, specially the stars light shining on the farthest guy from the sea.
The colors also seemed to represent some meaning. The darkness of the leaves around the outline made it seem as if the slaves were leaving somewhere worse than they are about to go to. Somewhere were there is hope and light. Douglas didn’t use many bright colors, he used more of a faded colors to maybe show that this is taking place a long time ago.
Overall, I think Aaron Douglas did a great job painting this piece of work. The title did add some information to the painting. I think it meant that the slaves were going into bondage. So I knew that with the ship coming they weren’t really being freed. With the title and the painting I think he definitely got his point across.
