The next step is to sue them. You can't get your insurance company to fix anything for your bike/car.

Sue the insurance company. Not sure, but liability doesn't include underinsured/non-insured motorists?

nope.

uninsured/ underinsured is an additional coverage - I always carry it. It is usually pretty cheap.

Ok just to clear things up, you cannot get uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage if you already DONT have FULL coverage? Is that right? One person said yes, one said no.

+1 to everyone that said it.

That helped save me a few months ago...

Even if the other person carries insurance but their coverage isnt high enough to cover everything....then your uninsured part of ur policy will kick in and help you out a little.

I believe that if you have full coverage, then uninsured only pays your deductible. Otherwise, if you are hit by an uninsured motorist it is the same as if you ran into a light pole. Insurance covers the loss minus the deductible. (Edit, it also kicks in like Amanda says above for "underinsured")

So in summary, if you have full coverage, don't waste your money on uninsured motorist, unless your deductible is too much to swallow, and if that is the case, get a smaller deductible. Your insurance company may vary, but if your uninsured coverage is really cheap, then this is probably what is happening.

If you don't have full coverage, why would you think that getting t-boned by someone else is more of a risk than wrapping yourself around a tree? I'm sure that uninsured will cost just about as much as full coverage if you don't already have full coverage if you think that you are going to be fully compensated for an accident. I've never looked into such a weird thing.

Finally, you can always sue the other person...assuming they stop...as someone else mentioned.

Personally, my bike is only worth $2500 and I have full medical insurance through work already, so why would I waste money on anything more than the minimal liability required by law. The most I lose is $2500 and i would have paid that off twice now if I had had full coverage on it..

Lets pretend your bike is worth more. Some azzhole plowed you and ran.
With uninsured you pay nothing and it doesnt count against you. Your med insurance pays your med bills and your uninsured pays you for missed time at work. All the while your bike is being repaired or replaced.
For plenty here the price of the insurance is well worth the expense.

If that is the case then you get full coverage...which does all of the same...minus your deductible...Then you are covered for if you are the azzhole instead of it having to be someone else. Its very possible that I'm wrong, but when my fiance totalled her car they paid for all kinds of surprising things, including medical, because she didn't have seperate medical coverage. Once you get full coverage, I think the only thing that uninsured covers is your deductible, basically, functionally. Because everything else is under "full". For the "underinsured part" coverage, the minimum coverage is $25000. Who has a $25000 bike? Now medically, that's where things get different. Depending on your medical coverage, that could be a huge expense, and may make uninsured worthwile to carry. Different policies vary too, so you can't really take one persons experience, even mine.

I wasn't saying don't get insurance, I'm saying sometimes it makes sense not to have it. You can't blanket say, "get uninsured motorist coverage".
