CMRA Mini Endurance Season Finale: Taking Home The Big Prize

The 2009 mini endurance season came to a close this past Saturday at Oak Hill with the running of the final race of the season, a 5-hour. My team, Team Sidewinder, didnít need to win the race to win the championship, but race wins are always nice when you can get them, so we showed up aiming to take the top spot. We were especially driven after the bitter taste of the last event at Cresson.

Each of my teammates put in very quick rides. We led the race much of the day, but it was never easy and we could never build up a comfortable margin. Our competition stepped up and battled hard. Team Shake and Bake, though not a championship points contender, showed up wanting the win and rode hard all day. So, too, did No Homeless, with whom we banged bars with for most of the first hour. Stiff competition also came from Team Von Schlechten Lerbern, eurtoast, AF1 and Highlands Kawasaki Mini. Eventually No Homeless would get a rock in the radiator and they would drop out. Team Von Schlechten Lerbern would also suffer some sort of cooling system issue, slowing them up a bit. This made our job a little easier, but the battle of the weekend, and perhaps the season was just about to start.

I pitted at the four hour mark and handed off to Derek Thomas. At this point we had about a 30 second lead. Everything was looking good for a cruise to the checkers and then - BAM! - we made a complete rookie mistake and botched the fuel stop! This resulted in a 30 second penalty in the pits. (As a side note, Iíve been handing these penalties out all year to the teams, and now I got to feel what itís like to get one Ė oh man, it stings!) After the penalty, DT left the pits for the final stint of the day. He only needed to ride around to get points, but he said, ďThis is our race to win, and Iím gonna win it!Ē Dustin Dominguez, now piloting the Shake and Bake Ninja 250 was right there with him upon pit exit, which set up some of the most epic racing you have ever seen (if you saw it). For the next 35 to 40 minutes, DT and Dominguez traded the lead. No corner was spared passing antics and banzai moves. Dominguez would back his 250 into the corners while DT would stuff it up the inside. Lap times were almost identical for the two, and the lead was traded almost once a lap for the next half hour. Those that watched it were completely entertained by it all -- a true 40 minute sprint race!

Unfortunately DT got in some traffic, was pushed wide, and missed a shift. This allowed Dominguez to open a small gap. At this point, tired and cramping from being folded up like a pretzel at full speed, DT decided to put it in cruise mode. DT rode it home to a solid second place in the race, which was far more than we needed to take the overall mini endurance championship. The #1 plate is ours!

Itís been a of a mini endurance season, one that was crazy with crashes, mechanicals, hard fought wins and bar banging right to the end. Our little Honda Ride Smart/CRF150R ran perfectly all day long and never put a wheel wrong. Iíve ridden a ton of mins over the years, and this is the best one Iíve ever been on. Mucho thanks to my teammates, Pappy, Steve-O, DT, and Greg-O for the hellacious opportunity to ride a killer bike and contribute to the #1 plate. Iíve known my teammates for years and they are all first class crazy fvcks. Iím glad to call them my friends. Many, many thanks to John Hutchison at SCRC and those long lasting, sticky Bridgestone tires, and a ton of thanks to thanks to Cycle Concepts, Steve Guynes, Mark Niemi, M4, Keith Hertellís Road and Track Suspension, SMS Racing, Chad Thiezen and the CMRA for hosting the show.

Oh, and did I mention I like #1 plates?
