Question I have "full coverage" with Progressive, should I file a claim?

I dumped my MC, some pics here; http://www.motohouston.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=111896

I have "full coverage" with Progressive but can't decide if I should file a claim.

Deductable is $250. No claims at all and 13 months and 12kmiles since I bought the bike new.

The handle bars are slightly bent, and whatever you call the block of metal at the end of the forks that the front tire mounts to is damaged. In addition to the two pieces of plastic that are scratched up the mirror and clutch lever are bent.

I could just get some new bars and paint the other and replace the bent stuff.

Or, make the insurance claim & put it in the shop and ask for it to be made new again?

Also, where should I take it if you think I should make a claim? The dealership (Mancuso South)???

thanks!

I'm making mine new without the insurance claim. I figured it would be cheaper in the long run.

Ya I always said I would only file a claim if it was totaled or stolen, otherwise your gonna pay more in the long run when they jack your rates up.

If your talking about the damage from you dropping the bike, no don't claim that! Like everyone else said wait till you go down and it might be totaled or if it gets stolen otherwise either pay for it out of pocket or ride it like it is

Well when my bike was knocked over state farm claimed it as vandalism and only charged me a $25.00 co-pay and didnt touch my rates. There was $2400.00 in damage.

I have full coverage with State Farm and spend 45 a month.

On a side note if you make a claim, They cant raise your rates for anything that isn't your fault. For at fault accidents thats different.

They must hate you. I was 19 on a 600cc sport bike with a record and they were still the cheapest for me....til they dropped me that is.

Ducoop is right. It is against the law for your insurance company to raise your rates for something you have no control over (i.e. vandalism, car break-in). However, your insurance has the right to cancel your policy though.

I had a friend who had his truck broken into and his insurance company said they were going to raise his rates. He calmly told them he would be contacting the Texas Insurance Commission. They backed off immediately.

Handlebars are cheap, and I imagine if you patiently watch eBay, you will find some plastic pop up for not too much. Try bikebandit.com and check on OEM replacement plastic parts cost for you model.

http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmot...-2008/o/m17203

Factory stuff from Bike Bandit isn't as expensive as many think, but verus (no pun intended) what a claim may cost you over time, probably not bad, and sometimes cheaper than a professional repaint. Almost always better to replace than repaint from a quality standpoint IMO.

As for the end of forks, if it is not structurally damaged, don't worry about it, many bikes have scrapes on the bottom of the forks. It's one of the things I always check when buying a bike, and a ton have them. If it really bugs you, just add it to the list to change out later, maybe when you service you front forks or have your springs upgraded.

This is assuming you do it yourself. It's not hard to to if you are patient and just take your time. If you lack the desire to do it yourself, then when adding in the labor rates, an insurance claim may be the way to go for you. I wouldn't use insurance though unless it was close to totaled or over $1500 or more to fix.

All these parts even ordered from BikeBandt and way under that threshold.

My $0.02.
