On another note, I lost traction in the wet a bit ago on my way home from work, I grabbed 1st gear a little hard from the light and did a 1/8th mile rolling burnout. Hey, it happens

the crown of the roads causes left side wear. esp if all you do is commute.

YES.

but also understand that a headshake is not always due to tire wearing out. it can also be uneven forks,(both in fluid levels, and height settings) bad bearings in wheel, and steering head, or improperly tightened in those areas. unbalanced wheel as well.

also RACER -X brings up another valid point : "the crown of the roads causes left side wear. esp if all you do is commute."

when it comes to tires there is almost more than 2 or more factors causing the initial buildup of wear.

Tires typically wear more on the left because of two reasons, left hand turns because they are longer and road crowning. Low front tire presure will exaggerate the tire wear.

+1 on that

If the wobble had already been there before the incident then it is likely that the tire was already very worn or had thrown the tread off. Not doing a simple pre-ride check of at least tires and brakes could have cost you a lot.

As I read this thread, I was wondering who would be first with the right answers.
Road crowning and longer left turns (as well as most people are more comfortable in left turns than right, leading to more aggressive left turns) are what cause tires to wear faster on the left side.
Bar shake with no hands is usually an indicator of a worn front tire even if it appears to have plenty of tread. No-hand bar shake is not unsafe in itself, as long you ride aware of it, but it means that you should start thinking about replacing the tire in the near future.
These questions get asked over and over, with each new generation of riders as well as others like front tire cupping, chain adjustment, how to determine when the chain is worn, etc.

I think Patrick, as our resident guru should make a sticky detailing these questions, as well as other new guy questions from his experience, so that we can refer to to this instead of the usual street speculation, which is usually wrong (Ref: Breaking in your new bike as hard as possible is better than following the owners manual).

Well some really good responses on here. I know i should be more aware of my over all bike status but I have to say that since I ride everyday and everywhere I do get lazy and prob often over look things like that. Sadly I usually only look at my back tire. But thank you guys for all the really good help and Ryne ill call you shortly.
