Same as me, stock is 16/43, so we should be geared pretty close. I like to be up over the 9K mark on the tach for a strong drive out.

so a slower person would still grab 2 gears maybe 5th to 3rd another before flicking the bike right for the drive out?

makes sense. If I ever make it out to msr again I will try this and let everyone know how much of a difference it makes (cuz I know it will)

I was thinking that was how I rode the track the one time I got the chance.
Except for the parade laps, I sometimes down to second.

IMHO, you are going to need to be running into the low 40's to be catching those kind of gears man.

I run :42's on a -1/+1 750 and never get remotely close to 6th gear, at MSRH, anywhere. Maybe 600's are that much different. I dunno.

Point is..........going into the carousel in what ever gear you feel comfy, you will need to drop another before the flop to the right to drive out on pit straight. Decreasing radius turn = slowing as you progress through the turn.

I do fine in the carousel itself, its one of the places i feel most comfortable passing, but in the series of little turns leading into the pit straight, i feel out of whack, and almost always I'm in too high of a gear to make a good drive out to the pit straight, and waste time downshifting where that little speedbump area is.

For those with 600's, can you walk me through your gear selection from the carousel, onto the pit straight.

I'm almost certain that I can pick up a second or so just by having a better gear selection in that particular area.
Depending on how fast your corner speed is but im in 3rd gear through there and keep it there on the straight. dont down shift again into 2nd. carry more corner speed through there and keep it in 3rd... But im on a 08 R6 but it should be the same for you if you are geared right

no there is absolutely no way to hit 6th gear unless the gearing is rediculously for stunting. lol. i had a 06 gsxr 600 and now have a 08 r6. it aint happening

Funny, I run 15/45 on my 600 and it's just at the rev limiter tipping into Diamonds Edge. In 6th.....

You're wrong. Like Alonzo and Buck have said, I also hit 6th gear, twice actually, on MSRH on my old 06 R6 with -1/+1 gearing and hit it once a lap with -1/+0 gearing. You just need more throttle, less brakes.

What's the difference if I have taller gearing and get the same drive in 2nd that someone in 3rd gets, but I only get to 5th and not 6th?

Did that make sense?

Your gearing should be a comprimise of sorts. You want good drive out of the corners at a power producing RPM, and you should also be hitting the rev limiter in top gear on the longest straight. I hit sixth on all the straights except pit straight. Just for a few seconds coming into carousel if I'm on a hot lap, but into Diamonds Edge it pops off 1-3 times depending on the size of my sac that day.

so i go from 6th on the front straight.. and i keep it in 6th for the carousel... hehe

on the track bike (gsxr750)-1/+2 ... i am in 4 coming down the front, normally redline it for a split second, then hit 3rd before the carousel, hit second when i bring the bike up straight to make the right onto the pit straight.

i'm late, but i'm here
