Tire help. When are Wets needed?

At what point do you switch from a street/track tire (bt003) to a wet?

on track?

When its raining and you really want to get the most traction you can.

On the street? Never.

On the track you pretty well have to be in rain for rain tires to work like they're supposed to. If it's dry in spots or drying, they'll eat up like nobody's business.

You need standing water and water on the track for them to be cool enough to work.

Most of the time, DOTs are fine for damp/ wet conditions.

I got around pretty quickly in VERY wet conditions @ MSR-H on 003Race tires.

Like Tom said, there has to be standing water everywhere for it to be necessary. Granted, you won't be running race pace on 003s or equivalent, they're safe.

Remain smooth and cool, you'll be fine.

DOT's work well on wet tracks - slicks even do ok on damp / even wet tracks (ask GB) - slicks DO NOT work well when there is standing (puddles) of water. Rain tire (as Tom said) need to be in the rain.

only use them if you're actually going to be riding "while it is raining" as everyone else said, they're no good if it isn't pouring down. i as well as plenty other people can still click along at a nice pace with our regular track tires with a pretty wet track. also depends on the size of your nuts too.

What is ya'lls opinion on switching back to a true street tire for damp conditions. I.E.: go to a BT016 from a BT003. Any advantage?

Personally I'd rather use a 016 in wet conditions unless it's really wet. I'd pick the 016 over the 003Pro in wet unless I could get a supersoft 003PRO.
