Helmets, buying one used

I found a pretty nice used Suomy lid for sale but the only problem is the manufacture date is Feb 2005, dude said he wore the helmet less than five times and bought it brand new two years ago. I've read somewhere that after a helmet is five years old you should change it.

Is this true under normal wear? Or once its reached five years, put it on the shelf? Whats the real deal here?

I'm leaning more towards Arai, its the only lid I've had and had no problems with it

alot of the helmets that we have to chose from here in the states are older models compared to those available over seas. i've had quite a few replica helmets that seem to always be several years old. i wouldn't have a problem with buying this one.

I personally think its a bad idea to by used helmes PERIOD. Just because he said he only used it 5 times doesn't mean he's telling the truth. No does it mean he didn't drop it all 5 times he used it.

If the foam/padding isnt breaking down or damaged and the shell is good, I say its good.

foam padding, becomes more brittle w/ age, the minute it comes off the mold machine, it starts to harden.

sounds like a decent buy.
I would check for scratches & dings just to make sure it hadn't been dropped.
Used helmet is better than no helmet at all.

My lid is from 04

I went down and smacked my head very hard and... Well it did it's job. I still wear it and trust it today. Yuup it's been down on, nope I'm not retiring it.

I would get the lid if it's in good condition and a good price.

Hooligan, helmets are a 1 time use item. The part that protects you is the styrofoam. In an impact it compresses and absorbs the energy. But once its been compressed once it help you in a second crash.

A definite +1, but we know that everyone always tells the truth

In addition to all of this, where did they store the helmet? As an example, if you keep your helmet in the garage, the constant temperature changes, high humidity, etc. will cause it to wear out more rapidly than if you keep it in your house.

Buy new IMO.

I always thought buying a used lid was like that of buying used undies. Unless it's prestine, I'd shop elsewhere. If it looks like it's NIB condition, save yourself a few bucks.

and I would never buy used undies....I use the same logic unless it's an absolute steal and I personally know the seller (like my EXO-400). $40, it had been worn once...even smelled new. I jumped on that deal.

helmets are like condoms. if its used, doesnt fit right, or could possibly have structural damage, leave it where it lay. personally, i like the whole '' fresh out the box feeling.''
