Now What?

Soooo I took my RC51 over to the Honda dealership because the bike was cutting out on me and then just stopped running altogether. I told them I wanted it mechanically sound and I wanted it to be a daily rider, start up every time, turn it on and ride kind of bike. They understood and took it to be diagnosed and fixed. They said the plugs were fouled and they replaced them and they put in a new battery. I went to pick up the bike and the guy at the service desk had trouble starting the bike and riding it around. The tech was there revving the out of the bike (flames shooting out the exhaust). I'm pretty sure cold revving a bike is bad! I then asked if they pulled out the choke and they both looked at me puzzled (they had no idea it had a choke). I pulled out the choke and it was running fine. I asked the tech if the air fuel ratios and everything was fine. He said "I think it is running lean and it looks like the power commander is on the leanest setting." I then asked him to show me and he admitted he didn't know how to operate or use the power commander. I was concerned but I took the bike because it was working and I just thought they were idiots. I get home and let the bike sit for a while, I try to ride later and same problem as before. I'm riding down the street and the bike cuts out on me. It does it a couple more times till it won't even start and I end up having to push it like 2 blocks home. I get the bike back over to Honda and the service manager says he will fix it and get it running, even put it on the dyno to tune it. He says he will fix everything up until having to replace the engine.

I get a phone call today and the service manager says my power commander is bad and that he can take it off and the bike will run, not perfectly, but it will run (has full yoshi pipes and k&n filter). Or I can buy a new Power Commander and he will install and tune it for me for free. Having the Yoshi system and k&n filter is bad for the bike without a tune right, and a pc is needed for a tune right?

WTF do I do? I'm that they would make me waste my time, send me out on a bike that they think may not be operable/SAFE, and give me my bike back without fixing the problem and charging me $500 for it.

Well for my 2 cents worth ,

Lean power commander and fouled plugs that does not seem to go together.

Anyhow:
I would put it ALL back to stock , hopefully you saved al the original Honda parts.

Check all the sensors and electrical connections too.

That might get you back to a decent running bike which is a good starting point.

I don't have any of the original parts, I purchased the bike with the performance parts already on it. So you think I should just have them yank off the power commander and take it back? It won't be running well without some sort of tune though right?

my bike ran fine before the power commander, with full exhaust and bmc race filter.....i'd bring it home and disconnect the power commander yourself....they may be hunting for a solution and looking for a way to drag more cash out of you....the current economy is a , and everyone is feeling it.....i may be able to find you a map on the dynojet website and load it for you with my laptop.....if you're interested.

power commanders and rc51 don't mix well. unless you have a full exhaust on the rc I say take it off. it is unnecessary.

Yeah, I would definitely be interested, but my PC is a PCll. I don't know if you can hook those up to your lap top or not. Also, it came with the bike so I don't have any of the cables for it or anything.

It has a full Yoshi exhaust on it.

ahh, ok. you need a pc then. I used a techlusion fuel unit on my rc51. not quite a race tune but it did the job reliably.

which honda dealership?

since you put aftermarket stuff on it, the PC, you are now outta normal honda dealership knowledge, doesn't mean they don't have qualified personnel.

fyi, i'd recommend metric cycles or M/U

i didn't know an RC had a choke.

I believe technically speaking it does not work like a traditional "choke," but for all practical purposes it is one (it even has the universal "choke" graphic on the head of the )

still not an rc51. 4cyl v 2 cyl. i think it has to do with large throttle bodies and trying to keep it running while it is cold.

My guess, is that due to it's root design for the racetrack, it was a keep-it-simple-stupid approach. No need for uneccessary elctronic auto-choke on an essentially ready for the racetrack bike. That's also my opinion as to why the rear tailight assembly was so ugly on the RC51s. It's almost as if they designed the bike and though oh , it's needs a taillight.

Also you could buy a factory racer version of the RC51 from dealers as well. It came w/ race bodywork, no lights, etc. Then you could also buy the HRC kit that gave you the HRC wiring harness, HRC designed Akrapovic exahaust among other things... Oh the glory days of the RC51...
