Question Question: Need SV650 Help Urgently

Here is a question for you: Where is the emissions sticker on a first gen SV650 supposed to be?

I have passed along my SV to my dad and he is trying to register it in the Republik of California. It has passed inspection including Smog certification but they won't register the bike without seeing the emissions sticker on the bike. It is moronic to say the least but they won't budge.

If anyone can tell me where it is (because it is possibly missing), I would appreciate it. I would appreciate it even more if someone was willing to peel theirs off for me.

He has looked under the tank and exposed areas of the frame with no luck.

Thanks for your help!

I don't ever recall seeing one on my SV (first or second gen). Have you posted on svrider.com?

I haven't posted on SVRider yet. That is a good idea. It is a 2001. I swear that I have never seen one on it but the are adamant about it.

My wife's GSXR has one on the right side of the frame half under the side fairing.

hey i just dropped a note to all my buds, they are in Cali,
they're kinda confused as to the sticker that you are talking about, here's one reply that i think make sence:

I think you or your Dad need to register the bike at the DMV and they will issue you a sticker depending on the model of the bike and it's year; older bikes pre-2003 are exempt from the air quality standards.

but as i recall, when registering a car, depending on the year, you get a smog-check form that you take to mechanic, once it passes the smog-check, you'd send the form, and the money for registeration to DMV and that's it. you're tag is what you need and it says that you're vehicle has passed smog check!
if i hear anything more from my friends i'll let you know,

here's another respond from a friend in cali.
I'm not sure about this, but your old bike may go by the federal emission
statndards and not CA. The only time you would see that sticker is
usually on a CA bought bike. You did buy it in TX, right?

come to think of it, my bud got a klx250, in Nevada and brought it to cali, klx250 are illegal in cali. but since he got it in another state they didn't mess with him.

Thanks for the updates. This sticker itself was supposed to have been affixed to the frame (at the factory) and refers to the federal emissions standards. Apparently they won't release the inspection/smog check form (passing) without seeing the physical sticker affixed to the frame. Without it, he can't do anything at the DMV.

I asked if he could take it to another place but since they have already run the smog checks and the balance of the inspection, it is locked into the state computer and he has to complete this with the same place.

I think he has run into an uninformed .

I will pass this information along to him and see if it helps. Thanks again for your efforts and let me know if any new info comes up. Has anyone with an SV seen this sticker?

I believe the bike was originally bought in TX but it was two owners ago. I bought this one from RacerX.

just got a text back from my bud, he's got three bikes in cali. he said the sticker should be on the rear fender or neck of the frame. if you don't have a sticker then you have to go through manufacturer of the bike or their parts dealer!
good luck dude

Thanks for all of the help. His neighbor is a CHP officer. The officer told him that it didn't matter since the bike had over 7500 miles on it and that it was 100% legal. He had talked to someone at Suzuki earlier in the day and they told him that he shouldn't need it but they sent him a certificate of compliance with federal emissions.

He is going back to the Dept of Motor Vehicles (which is where the inspection is done) on Monday and tell them if they won't license it, he will send his money to me and I will renew the registration in TX. The CHP officer said that it was perfectly legal for my dad to ride a bike with TX tags as long as it was still registered to me and it had insurance.

The government is a joke. The DMV is only open 4 days per week because the State of CA is bankrupt. LOL

Once again, thanks for the help. With this info we figured out how to get it done.

It was a sweet bike till I crashed it.

California. I could never imagine going back unless they killed off the politicians, half of the people and got rid of the gun laws. I don't think any of those are going to happen soon.

Here is an update:

Quote:
Still fighting with the DMV. I went back in and asked about the mileage exemption and they said that they only needed proof that it was federally compliant. I took them a certificate of federal compliance and then they said NO, we need to see the sticker. Now I am waiting for a certificate of compliance from the Air Resource Board... They said that it would be acceptable... maybe...
What a joke. I would have come unglued on somebody at DMV by now. IF he would have known, he could have had his neighbor the CHP officer complete the inspection and he would be finished with this.

I am preaching to the choir here but putting the government in charge of anything is a bad idea. It is a good thing he didn't need a heart transplant...
