I-45 Closure - Delayed

this just in...

The Texas Department of Transportation agreed to postpone a tightly scheduled construction project on Interstate 45 after a public outcry from Galveston business leaders who were concerned about access to the island during a crucial tourist weekend.

The state agency had planned to close a short section of the Gulf Freeway this weekend to demolish the Calder Road bridge in League City. But TxDOT announced Tuesday that it has tentatively rescheduled the closure for Sept. 11-12, after Labor Day.

“In this case the volume of complaints escalated the issue and triggered an executive level analysis of the pros and consequences of proceeding with this weekend's closure,” TxDOT spokeswoman Raquelle Lewis said in a statement.

The work is part of a $21 million project to tie Texas 96 directly to I-45.

Lewis said the state will incur daily charges for the delay, but would try to minimize the costs by working with the contractor, Houston-based W.W. Webber LLC.

“I'm not at liberty to say right now what the costs are,” she said. “That will have to be negotiated.”

The push by Galveston business people to postpone the road work reflects a shared anxiety about the still-vulnerable state of the island's economy.
