Do they have to be new? I've got a 97 ext cab 4x4 f-150 for a lot less than that.

^^^^^^^^^^^

It happens all the time, we print the paper in advance.. so I used to browse the ads, find a car from a dealer in one of those full page ads that was priced WAAAAAY below wholesale and I'd call them on it the minute they opened the next day, said I had cash and was on my way to buy, suddenly the car isn't there anymore.. the paper hadn't even hit the streets yet!!

it's all a big ripoff

Not gonna happen. Sorry. If the vehicle was available, which by law it has to be, you would pay the $9999 + destination (which probably wasn't included in the ad price), advertising, dealer prep, ttl, and all of those other good fees. That's if you qualified for all of the incentives which I'm sure included FMCC discounts (no cash, you have to finance initially) and any other applicable Ford incentives. My advice is this:

If you are dead set on a NEW vehicle, do your research. Know what the rebates are, know what kind of dealer cash is out there if any, and just be honest with your salesperson of what you want to pay. By all means get a great deal, but be realistic in your pricing expectations. You won't pay 10 grand for a 15,000 car that doesn't have any rebates on it. I didn't really like "educated" customers b/c I couldn't "steal" rebates, but it did make the deal quick and easy for me though. my .02
