Typically when I am at home I place a 25 lb dumbbell under the wheel. It is the perfect height and the axle lines right up. Holding the rear caliper bracket in place while sliding the rear axle in can be a pain in the if you do not have something supporting the weight of the wheel.

Right on! I always sit on the right side of the bike and rest the tire between my feet and point my toes up or down to raise the tire.
