The leader had passed him well before he got into the tight stuff. One might assume a look back before entering said tight stuff to see who else was racing to the checker on the last lap so he could back off in time and not hold up the train. More then one backmarker did just this on the last lap. It's not like he was racing anyone else out there, he was all by his lonesome.

Poor situational awareness.

The rule says to hole your line, I think we're too used to the slower riders getting out of the way. In all the track days I've been (and I know its not a race) we're always told hold your line the faster guys will find a way arround you.

Right, and that's the spirit of the rule as I read it; however there is a bit of decorum/ eticette (sp?) that goes along with it and the lapped traffic traditionally will sit up and get out of the way for the race leaders. Especially since JRP wasn't racing with anyone... he was all alone until Hayes got there.

This debate is an example of the racer/non-racer thing that was in another thread. Racers know that even though, in this case, the rules say to hold your line, what's not written but understood is that you concede the race line to the race leaders when being lapped. You're taught this at the club level and you don't forget it when you go pro racing, I assure you. Club racers will generally do this in endurance races, and if you're being really courteous, you'll point or give some kind of indication of where faster traffic should go (inside, outside, etc.)

JRP knew he had company - one can hear the bikes on one's tail. He knew he was being overtaken when the blue flag was waved, and he admitted he saw the flag; he knew he was being passed by the leader when he saw the 4 bike go by. More blue flags meant someone else was there, too. Move out of the way safely, please.

So, while the rules state to hold your line when being passed, and everyone knows (or should know) that the guy in front, no matter how slow, erratic, or boneheaded has the right of way and thus the full reponsibility for passing safely falls on the shoulders of the passer, the bulk of this incident is JRP's fault. He is surely aware of proper track decorum. That said, I don't believe he should have been punished as he was, and I don't think Luddington was correct in saying he "****ed up the show". Luddington should have used the opportunity to inform JRP how to handle the situation, and, perhaps, gone as far as issing a warning that balking the race leaders is dangerous at a minumum, and may come with some penalty in the future as well. Also, the AMA is stupid, which we all know and agree on.

1. JRP should have moved over.
2. JRP was lucky Hayes didn't run him over.
3. JRP was lucky Yates didn't punt him since Yates has a history of that.
4. The AMA made this somewhat minor issue a big deal when they went ballistic trying to protect "the show", whatever that is.
5. JRP, although a bit of a track-rude bonehead, didn't deserve the punishment he got.
6. Luddington is an .
7. The AMA sucks.
